Actually operating trains is a loss making activity for most TOCs. They only do it to get the (ever smaller) subsidies the DfT offer. So really any excuse to not operate trains is good news for train operating companies…
You don’t run other things like national defence with the aim of making a profit. You consider your defence budget to be part of the cost of running a country.
So why should we expect national infrastructure like public transport and water to be making a profit for shareholders?
