The story is really that the number of pubs didn’t really change despite the very difficult trading year.
I remember hearing something a decade ago saying that a pub a day was closing, so I expected this year’s losses to be more than 400.
COVID has made an already bad problem worse. Loss of footfall is obviously a major issue, however things like increasing rent and beer ties is not helping most independent pubs, which allows chains to dominate. Those who like independent pubs then stop going out altogether and just drink at home, where it is also cheaper. A night out is much more of a luxury these days, simply based on cost alone for many people. While pubs are a great part of the British community, they have been facing severe issues long before COVID.
Shop bought beer = £1.25 – £1.50 per beer. Pub – at least £3, often more than £5. Just saying.
This is obviously bad, but the similar article in the Guardian said that it’s less than in 2019 and about half the number that closed in 2018, so it’s not as bad as it looks.
There will be none left in Wales if commandant Drakeford has his way
Yeah I can’t be doing paying £6 for a drink I can have at home for £1. For the pleasure of sitting in a different room.
I was at Uni mid 90’s – Liverpool.
Now somebody told me Liverpool has HALF the bars it had back then…. sounds quite amazing if true.
Still… I was there the time of Cream and the Nation… my one stop night out, number of bars immaterial )))
All the touristy pubs in Oxford closed. Most others are still kicking.
My parents live on Dartmoor, one of the most popular pubs for many many decades (the plume of feathers) closed a year ago with the owners going bankrupt, it is still for sale.
Used to go to pubs all the time but paying £6 for a pint is just silly so I haven’t been to one in ages. Shame really
Havent seen so many pubs go under since they banned smoking
I wonder how many of these that closed are closed for good and haven’t reopened under new ownership. Only one of my locals shut but it’s now under community ownership.
Never understood why alcohol duty isn’t just removed off of alcohol served in pubs but increased on stuff sold in the shops.
What do you expect, this government has let companies pay piss poor wages to the worker, with hardly any disposable income, to go and socialise with other working people. This government doesn’t want working people to socialise together, because people talk about issues. The government definitely doesn’t want that, so they by paying you poor wages and no disposable income, takes away any power you may achieve, if you had more money, money= power.
