”There is also a belief in some parts of Government that that comparably high Irish rates of social welfare are acting as a magnet for Ukrainian refugees.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin today, Mr Martin described a “phenomenon” where people are coming to Ireland from other European states”
Cracks are starting to show
I mean we do have relatively good welfare, it’s no secret.
Give nearly double what the next highest paying country gives a week in dole (€220), free accommodation, free healthcare, free transport, heavily subsidised food…
I’m all for helping out but our provisions are most certainly excessive. We’ve had to allocate another €5 billion in the new budget to cover this, while the HSE runs at a €1.5bn deficit.
Can’t blame the refugees, they’re only doing what anyone else in their situation would do. But we should certainly be looking to bring our offering into line with the EU average.
We’ve no capacity left at all in terms of accommodation.
