Where in Europe is it best to be a woman?

  1. I don’t fully understand the ranking system that they have in place for this.

Is it based on equality for genders?

Or is it based on particular and special treatment for women?

Like, Denmark is number 1 & Norway is number 7.
Does that mean that there is systemic gender inequalities practiced in Norway that aren’t in Denmark?

Or does it mean that in Denmark there are additional services, structures, quotas, etc to elevate specifically women’s quality of life?

Or is it a subjective “feelings” based survey figure?

  2. We’re 11th. It’s not really surprising to me given how so many women are forced to quit their jobs due to the cost of childcare

  3. I looked at the methods, and the scoring is based on legal discrimination against women, safety, etc. All good parameters.

However, one of them is about the percentage of women that have mobile phones, on the logic that a woman with phone access could seek help in abusive situations. I’m not sure the logic is that strong. Surprisingly Ireland scored poorly in that category, and it’s the main reason for the relatively low score.

There’s a part of me that always wants to win these things, but there’s a bigger part that says any ranking system has its flaws and they don’t really matter. We’re generally doing ok, but could learn some things from it to catch up with our neighbours
