In October 23, 1991, Ukrainian parliament reiterated non-nuclear status of Ukraine. Nearly 5000 nuclear arms, 60 Tu-22 strategic bomber planes and 423 long-range missiles has been dismantled and destroyed in terms of The Budapest Memorandum during 1990s. (Description below. Photos: AP, Reuters)

  1. Ukraine also handed Russia hundreds of Kh-22 “aircraft carrier destroyer missiles” which they now use to bomb Ukrainian apartment buildings.

We need to arm Ukraine better. Can’t leave them behind. They honored their word and gave up the third largest nuclear arsenal for the benefit of global peace.

  2. Sorry but for Ukraine this was big mistake. Russia only understands power. US and UK and Russia guaranteed Ukraine’s sovreignty then Russia repeatedly invaded and tried to take over Ukraine from within the Ukrainian govt but failed.

  3. Did they even have what they needed to use them? Hosting the missiles and being able to launch are two separated matter.

  4. They really should have kept a few of them, even 5 would be enough of a threat to stop russia from trying to genocide them.

  5. Such a shame. Not a fan of nukes, but I hope Ukraine develops them again. Recent times has shown they need them as a deterrent.

  6. And what a mistake that was and Bill Clinton was no help at the time and also pushed for this but I don’t blame him and they should have never agreed to this memorandum , I remember cause my family just came to America shortly after in the fall season of 1992

  7. The ruble also collapsed back then and all the money my dad saved for the move from Odesa to US was reduced by 90% overnight and I remember the exchange rate became crazy like it is now and my dad was paying 90-100 rubles per dollar so instead of coming to US with a half a million dollars to start a new life we came almost broke with an entire family and only $50K to make it

  8. But 30 years have past since and we still here so I guess we made it and I finally just personally bought my own home for me n my kids. A little late at 41 years old bu better late then never and It’s still weird for me to say my kids lol cause man life is crazy and I wasn’t planning on having kids at all but as they say such is life , went from being a kid myself when we first moved here to having 2 kids of my own that were both born around the corner from where I live in Philadelphia and now we are all trying to learn Ukrainian together lol cause I only speak russian because in 1991 and prior to that they only taught russian as the main language in Ukrainian schools and my mother actually took me out of school the last year we live in Odesa and got me an English Tudor/teacher and I went for private lessons for a year which I am so grateful to my mom for because when we came to US I already knew how to speak English pretty well and it didn’t take long or much for me to learn the rest and fit in and adapt because of that

  9. These look like hope. Who could have predicted Russia would debase itself and try to take all the Soviet successor states with it?

  10. And 21 years later get fucked
While the world pontificates and sends most of its outdated shit to help.

Why we not have our aircraft carriers in the Black Sea for Ukraine? Why?

  11. Betrayal and disgust. Make known the facts. These are not even controversial facts! This was signed, then this happened. Basic history stuff.

I want to live in an optimistic world on this subreddit. This struggle deserves my best shot. I say this will all be in the future history books all schoolchildren in the EU will learn. This story of Ukraine. A very clear story of a country being betrayed and then, an attempted genocide of that country, which “Does not Exist.”

We’ll see about that. History will not be kind to the criminals. Slava Ukraini.

  12. I wouldn’t be surprised if “a few” warheads were “lost” along the way. Clearly this would have an unexpected turn for ruskies.

  13. The irony is the one insisting and paying for it were the Americans. Because they did not want a precedent where every former soviet state to be nuclear armed (don’t forget until less a decade ago contry was practicality run by oligarchs stealing and selling everything to everyone)
