Two weeks pay working 40 hours a week at a very reputable high end steak chain. I quit, but how are we supposed to earn enough to live if this is the base pay?

  1. We do get TRONC, additional service charge – it could be anywhere between 60 and 160 extra a week, but it’s still terrible overall. Base pay is £11ph – in London. My rent is 2650 a month, sharing with one other person.

  2. welcome to the UK! the government has no interest in ensuring that everyone has an acceptable minimum level of lifestyle, sorry. maybe next year.

  3. Is that even minimum wage? Seems very low, especially for London.

Although, even a true London weighted salary rarely reflects the cost of living in the capital, in my view.

I hope you have found a better job now!

If you are still struggling for money, one thing that may help is having a browse of the [beermoneyuk](https://www.reddit.com/r/beermoneyuk/comments/15nynf3/inboxpounds_possibly_the_best_gpt_for_british/) sub, for lots of ways to make extra spending cash!

  4. I feel you. I used to work for a private members club in South West London. Base pay was £10.90 but had unlimited TRONC on a service charge of 12.5%. Could earn £400 – £600 extra a month. Made a huge difference in being able to live. Then they cut it to a flat £1 an hour. Quit two weeks later.

Service charge is the only way to survive on low paying jobs now.

  5. Bro, I’m telling you businesses here in the UK are addicted to low wage economy.

It’s very unfortunate this continues to go on. Fuck them, they’re out here with vacancies, yet they do not want to pay the work force proper pay packet

  6. The sad truth is, living shouldn’t be THIS difficult. But it’s a fucking mission everyday only for us working in restaurants, bars, cleaning services, etc to be paid peanuts while we watch rent, and other expenses skyrocket.

If everyone who was earning a wage under £20 p/h were to just stop working, society would literally fall apart. That isn’t me saying that people who have a good salary aren’t important, this is just me highlighting that we deserve to be paid more in a developed country like the UK. Living shouldn’t cost so much in the first place but also, not being paid appropriately really just puts us in a worse position

  7. That’s absolutely disgusting. In IT it’s common for experienced devs to earn this in a day working from home.

I’m so sorry.. honestly get out of there and either find a new employer or change industry. Don’t know how you live on that in London. Must feel trapped.

  8. If you are looking for chef work, i think i may have someone for you! Dm if needed

  9. Find someone who pays London living wage. I make over 300 pounds a week and only work 25 hrs a week.

Even if you do two PT jobs, london living wage can help you. Christmas is a good time to look because there’s a lot of seasonal work.

  10. The system is broken! Salaries are not enough and people are living payday to payday and mostly in debt. Some even work multiple jobs.

  11. That’s extremely low. Wages in the service industry have never been higher right now compared to recent years. There are many places paying £500 a week in and around London. Grocers, wholesalers etc. the trendy restaurants can and do pay shit money because there’s a constant supply of middle class people that think they have to work somewhere “clean” and “upmarket”

  12. If you’re out of work have a look into Host Staffing to see you can get on with them. You can pick & choose when you work through an app plus you can also see the pay before you pick the shifts. The pay is better than minimum wage for restaurant work & it’s busy this time of year.

  13. Hey! You’re checking wage stream which is set to only allow you to stream a max of 50% of your wages excluding tronc. Your actual payslip will be a lot more than that

  14. This doesn’t make sense sorry.

You said you make £11 p/h which whilst low, shouldn’t be *this* low. You also said you make from £60 p/w in tips/service charge.

Your biweekly pay was £659 after tax. This works out to be about £19,000 gross income p/a and a wage of about £8.20 p/h which is below minimum wage.

If you’re earning £11 p/h and only making £19k a year it sounds like you’re only working 33 hours a week and not 40… And that you’re not getting your service charge wages which should be a minimum of £3k extra a year.

Factoring all of this in, if you’re actually making £11 p/h for 40 hours a week with an average of £100 p/w in service charges your biweekly wages should be about £1k.

  15. Great Britain is a complete mess. We live in a dystopian country.

I fear for our youth. The extortionate rent and low wages offered is a complete joke.

I’ve read you need a huge amount of money to pay upfront for rent which will be coming from the worker’s savings or house deposit. In turn, the rent, will be put towards somebody’s mortgage, and of course the banks shall willingly take their share of the spoils.

Young people nowadays do not have a good life like we did and are still enjoying.

We need to do something about this. I have no idea what but some form of peaceful protest should be organised.

Hopefully we can have a new government to start doing something to help people out!

  16. If you are in a position of jumping from job to job get your cscs card and try construction, you can take this in a week easy starting out
