I want to mail my old iPhone 11 to somebody in the USA. I already picked the “gift” option in the bpost app, but now I need to enter the value and the country of origin. It cost me €800 back in 2019, but do I actually have to put €800 even tho it’s a gift? And origin? Belgium since I bought it here?

  1. I don’t think your phone will work there as Europe and USA do not use the same carrier frequencies. Wifi will work and 4G/5G might but normal texting and calling wont.

  2. I can see that nobody is actually answering your question. I used to work in logistics. You should add that the item you’re shipping is used or second hand. Import fees are generally a lot less on used items. And also you can be quite vauge in your description to avoid attention. Maybe ”used electronics” or ”used cellphone” is better than iPhone. Also the value of this phone is not retail value but the second hand value. But keep in mind that if the parcel is lost or destroyed you can onöy claim the value that it said on the label of the parcel.

  3. It was worth 800 EUR 2 years ago. Now it’s an old, used iphone. If it has a lifespan of 3 year, you could put the price at 800/3, as there’s 1 year of life left.

  4. Look up import fees for US and declare a value lower than that or else the receiver is gonna have to pay to get the package. IIRC they can import for a pretty high value without having to pay fees, so 800 might still be fine.

Also, don’t put in the new value of the phone. It’s not new and it’s probably not what the guy paid you.

  5. Origin is where it was made, China.

Value is what it’s worth today, i.e. what it’d cost to buy a used one in the same condition.

The US has no VAT and doesn’t charge import duty on packages worth under 800 USD so no one will pay any taxes.
