Pedestrian road deaths on course for 15-year high

  1. Guess we need to return to the age of graphic adverts – maybe a car falling out of the sky, like a piano, crushing an entire family on the footpath. I mean, we tell people to look both ways but what about looking up?

  2. Overall road deaths are trending down every year.

    Misleading title OP

  3. Population almost 1 million higher so this is isn’t really true on a per capita basis

  4. We gotta reduce motorway speed limits

Edit: I didn’t think adding an /s was needed but apparently it is.

  5. So how shall we blame the victims on this? No lights? No hivis? Walking too close to the edge?

  6. Investment in pedestrian infrastructure is pretty damn poor here in the West. I don’t think the new speed limits are the correct next move, a bit of enforcement, a bit of proper engineering and a more proactive information campaign would be more appropriate right now

  7. The government:

    Let’s reduce speed limits from 120 / 100 / 80 / 50 / 30 to 60 / 50 / 40 / 15

  8. Some of the driving on the roads is shocking lately, however there are some stupid pedestrians aswell

In the past 2 weeks alone, driving home late at night from work, I’ve came across 3 people walking on the wrong side of the road and wearing dark clothes

Only one car flashed like mad at me before coming to one of them, I’d have been on top of the pedestrian

  9. Rather than blaming speed limits, how about enforcing the current rules of the road? It’s scary how many people are using their phones while driving.

  10. Just put traffic cameras at crossings already..the number of pepole flying through red light with thier cars is astounding.
Looking left and right will not help you if drivers think red light is a mere suggestion.
And then there is whole traffic infrustructure in Ireland…no marked crossings with zebra…not adopting better practices…no proper cycling lanes..just lots of talk..plans..and cardboard signs

  11. There is one and only one simple reason for this and it’s a lack of investment in infrastructure and roads policing.

  12. Given that most of the deaths were at night, and the majority of pedestrian deaths occur in urban areas, how much of the blame is on the drivers and how much is on the pedestrians?

Is the increase all that surprising as the number of Urban Walkers had increased dramatically during Covid?

  13. This is down to the amount of gobshites using their phones whilst driving. Fuck off like….
