”Trinity College Dublin associate professor in economics Ronan Lyons told the Engineers Ireland national conference in UCD that original housing projections accounted for a net migration figure of 220,000 in this decade.
That figure had already been surpassed in the first three years of the decade, he explained” end quote/
That’s a crazy figure. The housing crisis is going to get way worse not better.
Maybe if we keep electing ethically-challenged FFFG candidates for office, despite their chronic ineptitude, things will improve?
Why are we not relaxing visa requirements for non-EU construction workers? This is fucking insane.0
I’ve seen this quote about population growth for the decade a few times.
It might still be correct. In fact it might be optimistic.
Whaaaaaat? I hear you cry. Well at some point there is going to be a recession. If it’s a deep one many people, both Irish and migrants will leave.
Numbers can go down as well as up.
It’s sort of funny to read this, considering that linking immigration with rising housing costs has been basically verboten on this sub for some time.
Question.. So what would the effect of a government led department, purely for the purchase of land and construction of units on a large scale for a few years to sell at cost price be. Let’s say eight years.
I know developers would go mental but currently they are generally sitting on planning permissions and waiting for the market to get slightly better. They are also kown as a heavy lobby group.
And before anyone says the government is incompetent to do something, for God’s sake you are right but also wrong. Impartial here, the government is throwing money at loads of schemes to buy (fair play) unfortunately these are being aimed to assist private purchasers which can’t purchase as no one is building. (not fiar play)
To take a step back, things are fucked. Bricks and mortar are missing while the money is there.
It’s hard to keep track of the hundreds of thousands of “English language students”. Maybe we should be tracking Deliveroo for better indicators…
What are housing predictions other than a balance between keeps the market happy and people just above water?
Fuck these numbers, we need an excess of housing and a bit of people power for once
Maybe…
…_just maybe_…
… reduce immigration
I say keep bringing people into the county, I mean that isn’t gonna exacerbate things at all. Oh and sure while you are at it ,increase most villages population in Ireland by 20 to 30 per cent overnight with men only, and if anyone complains just call the far-right. It’s a winning solution.
Just build a whole new city in like Athlone or Clones or something. Think about it. Itd be like those video games where you can design it perfectly from scratch rather than just squeezing in more and more without the infrastructure.
Lads, this whole issue is solvable and fecking unaddressed to keep housing prices up. It’s not due to migration. It’s due to planning law, workforce allocation, regulation and malincentives.
Free up land through deriliction taxes. Expand visa numbers for essential skilled workers. Rezone land accordingly with taxes on windfall gains. Subsidize essential materials. Approve modular housing projects, transition to timber framed housing. Limit build to rent projects. Compulsary purchasing rules on deriliction. Limit nimbyism
We need to call this an emergency. There needs to be a cap on immigration.
People can’t afford to eat properly, never mind ever dreaming of owning a house.
