The only real difference is the presence of the USA and in a shooting war with Russia you want the USA actively on your side.

It’s inherent to democracies. One democracy (the USA) can change it’s mind the next time it votes. The EU can’t all change their mind. Mostly because 27 democracies don’t have one.
Also the best offer Ukraine gets from USA is a member of NATO.
The best it can get from the EU is an equal member of the EU.
One will protect your sovereignty and the other will try to take it from you.
Well, except the Slovakian part of the EU, I guess.
I haven’t read the article link, but this is a silly headline. The EU is an economic governance organization. NATO is a military alliance. The two entities serve entirely different purposes.
