You can register your digital vote directly with the European Commission to end the trade with shark fins in the EU.
Sharks have been swimming through our oceans for over 400 million years. They have survived 4 mass extinctions in that time, but now many species are threatened with extinction. Be it through bycatch, marine pollution, or climate change – populations are steadily declining.
The biggest threat comes from targeted fisheries with the valuable fins as the primary focus. The fins are usually exported to Asia, where they end up as a delicacy in shark fin soup. However, a large part of the global fin trade flows through Europe, driving a machinery that empties more than 73 million sharks annually out of the oceans.
The easiest way to do this is to digitally sign the EU citizens’ initiative “Stop Finning – Stop the Trade”. If the minimum number of votes is reached, the EU Commission *must* discuss a ban on the fin trade. Chances are good that the bill will be approved. Voting is open to all EU citizens over the age of 18 and takes less than 1 minute.
