Some of you might remember before Euros were introduced we used Punt coins! I’m making ink blot paintings of these currencies, here are the first two! Hope you like them

  1. Just for some info these are our old ‘pre decimal coins’ which we’re designed by artist Percy Metcalfe! You might not recognise the decimals but your nan may, they’re from the 1920s!

The coin depicting the wolfhound is a Sixpence denoted 6d, while the bull is a Shilling!

In total there are 8 coins depicting our wonderful Irish animals including the deer and woodcock. After 1971, we changed over to the decimal system of which coins might be more recognisable. Thankfully, artist Gabriel Hayes kept the original stylings of the old coins (my favourite was the 5p bull)

You can check out the rest of the coins here: https://www.centralbank.ie/consumer-hub/notes-and-coins/irish-coin

  2. Great art work. Well done. Any ink blot art I “created” was a result of poor penmanship and was more “drunk spider” ink blot.

  3. Great job. Your prints look lovely and are a great bit of nostalgia.

I’m sure I’ve got a few of these pre-decimal coins in a drawer somewhere.

  4. The circles are a little sketchy in comparison to the detailed animals. Really impressive detail by the way, hopefully you get some customers.

  5. If you stick them all on an a4 in golden ink or something, throw me your Etsy and I’ll buy a copy!

  6. I still have an old 2p, fits perfectly in the €2 trolley slot!

I was working in a local shop the morning of the euro changeover. We had our tills stocked with euros and a bucket to chuck the punts in. The weirdest thing was having a till full of crisp new notes and shiny new coins, it just didn’t feel like real money.

  7. Am I correct in thinking these coins were removed from circulation around 1970 when the currency was changed to be divisible by 10. Would still like to see prints on Etsy OP if your thinking of selling your work I’d buy a copy these are great.

  8. I do love the convienence of the euro but punts had stellar designs, I wish the Irish euro with the harp had something more like them
