Can someone help me understand what this number “1” means above the dash, between 2 and T? I also sometimes see number 2 instead of 1. Just asking out of curiosity.

  1. It’s to prevent license plate fraud.

If you get a replacement plate, it has a 1 on it, invalidating the original plate. Etcetera.

  2. It means the license plate was replaced once. Number goes up when it’s replaced more often. I think it has to do with preventing fraud in case the original one was stolen.

  3. The license plate was stolen/lost. To prevent fraud with the lost/stolen plate, the replacements get a small number like you see here to invalidate the lost/stolen plates.

  4. As said, you get this code when the plates are replaced to indicate the originals being invalid.

But note: this only applies if the original plates are lost (or one of them). If you damage your plate you can hand them in when you get new ones. Then you don’t get such a code as the “original” plate is officially revoked and destroyed. No chance for duplicates.

    Also note:
There is a code engraved in the plate next to the blue rectangle. This is the unique ID of the plate. If this number is lost (for example because you drill through it) they cannot verify the plates for being original and you again get such a number on your plate (depends a bit on the shop how strict they are).

  5. I used to press license plates myself. Furthers i’ve seen is a ‘5’

All license plates (except for those white ones you put on your bike-carriers and etc.) are registered, not just by the car, every plate has an own individual ID code on the right bottom.

As soon as that ID on the right bottom is lost, either by some damage/scratches that make it unreadable or by simpling loosing 1 of the plates by a crash or something alike, you will get a new set of license plates, and that new set will come down to a ‘1’ added to it.

the old 2 registered licenseplates, whether both/single lost or scratched will result in those 2 license plates to be marked for destroyed 🙂
