I live in Glasgow and don’t really venture that far afield. I have almost no experience of driving in snow and don’t have snow/all-weather tyres. Anything to worry about?

  1. If its snowing in the first week of january then yes probably. If not then no

  2. At Perth, I’d take the road to Dundee and head up that way. That keeps you on motorway/ dual carriageway all the way up.

That road should be pretty well gritted/ cleared with snow ploughs (if needed) I wouldn’t think you would need anything special for tyres. Would bring normal supplies if stuck in a tailback.

Main issue would be at the very end in Inverurie. Main roads/ streets will likely be clear, where you can have problems is the final section once you leave main roads. If there is snow – give someone at your destination a call to check on the local conditions.

  3. Most likely you’ll be fine, but obviously it is possible there’s heavy snow fall at that time of year.

Just keep an eye on weather warnings closer to the date, the A90 is (normally) pretty much clear even when there’s decent snow.

Personal preference but if it is snowing I’d stick to the A90 from Perth (the route that goes past Dundee) I’d trust it to be cleared more than the A94

All in all I wouldn’t worry too much about it, most likely there won’t be any snow at all.

  4. Sorry, in the first few weeks of January we take the roads in.

  5. Once upon a time I did the reverse journey on the 1st of Jan and there was tonnes of snow even on the A90, and it wasn’t great, down as far as Forfar at least. I nearly rear-ended my soon to be FIL, and that was going no more than 40 and staying well back.

(The night before, I also managed to throw my then fiancé into a table full of other guests whilst doing some ceilidh dancing, to the Alexander Bros of all people.

She threatened to call off the wedding in embarrassment, but jokes on her, we went ahead anyway, and then still got divorced about three years later.)

I’d definitely follow tiny-robot’s advice and stick to the A90, rather than heading via Coupar Angus as this suggests. You will in all likelihood have a much better journey than my almost car crash on Hogmanay, and subsequent car crash of a first marriage. Drive safe.

  6. Check weather last week of December.

If it says snow.. worry about snow.

  7. stick to the A90. you could also check out aberdeenshire’s Fubar news on Facebook for reports from ppl in the field

  8. Chances of road impacting snow on the dual carriageways are pretty low, I’d say 1 or 3 days max out of the year.

  9. God only knows. It could be 13 degrees either side of zero

  10. You’ll have to watch out for the tree Ent migration. Happens around that time of year

  11. Someone needs to find a way of predicting the weather and telling everyone else what they think it will be! They could can it ‘the weather’ and make their predictions maybe after the news, or on an app, maybe even in the daily papers?

  12. You should be fine if you just stick to the main road up to Aberdeen and then A96 to inver. Keep an eye on the weather closer to the time
