    1937 mass execution of Belarusians

In October 1937, there was a mass extermination of Belarusian writers, artists and statespeople by the Soviet Union occupying authorities.

132 notable persons were executed, most of them on the night of 29–30 October 1937.

The picture in the post is of Kurapaty – a forest at the outskirts of Minsk, Belarus, where a vast number of people were executed and buried between 1937 and 1941. Most of the victims were the Belarusian intelligentsia, including the poets murdered on this day.

The exact Kurapaty body count is unknown. Estimates vary from 30k (official Soviet number) to 250k and even more (according to the British historian Norman Davies).

This event is not to be confused with The Night of Murdered Poets – the execution of thirteen Soviet Jews in Moscow on 12 August 1952.

Both these events are not be confused with The Executed Renaissance – the generation of Ukrainian language schoolteachers, poets, writers, and dramatists of the 1920s and early 1930s, who were arrested en masse, deported to the Gulag, imprisoned or executed.

  2. Sounds about normal for fearful dictatorships. They can’t stand for the people to be able to think for themselves.

  3. Celebrated in the shadows, a historical dance unfolded as the night swallowed the executed’s secrets. Echoes of the past still resonate, reminding us to embrace life’s mysteries and dance under the stars. ✨💃🌙

  4. And look at where Belorussia is now ! .. all speak russian , no self identity, ruled by a russian clown. .. That’s what happens when Russia is “protecting Russian speakers “ .. boo

  5. Biggest thread for the dictatorships are free-thinking people…
