Croatian President: We are not descendants of Nazis, nor did we persecute Jews during World War II, so we don’t have to tolerate all of their actions now

  1. It’s absolutely unimportant what your past is to be on the right side of history now. Israel has the right to defend itself against terrorists.

  2. The article reads:

“The President of the Republic, Zoran Milanović, was once again critical today of Croatia’s vote against the UN resolution calling for an immediate, permanent, and sustainable humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, as reported by HRT.

‘It’s not that I wasn’t consulted, but it was done behind my back. Well, not entirely behind my back because we knew it was happening, so I said, “Let’s see what they will do,”‘ Milanović said.

He stated that Croatia should have simply abstained from voting. He also mentioned that as a politician for the past 20 years, he had ‘elegantly’ stayed out of the turmoil in the Middle East, where ‘there are no good guys.’ He added that he had never advocated for a Palestinian state.

‘In this situation, I will not remain silent. We have no complexes, nor did we persecute Jews in World War II, so I shouldn’t have to endure all sorts of, but really all sorts of moves by the Israeli government, without any responsibility, from the perspective of a state and a people, the Croatian people, who have been mistreated for everything,’ Milanović said.

‘We are not descendants of Nazis; we are mostly descendants of anti-fascists, a large group of people who fought for justice, sometimes even violently and mistakenly. Therefore, I have no complexes. If the Germans and Austrians have them, let them seek treatment,’ he added.

Today, Milanović reiterated that he won’t be silenced, but he also emphasized that he won’t ‘shout every day like some Israeli ambassador in Zagreb for whom it is perfectly normal to rant and accuse the Croatian president in the middle of Zagreb, while our poor excuse for a government from Zrinjevac doesn’t react.'”

  3. This is like Erdogan [claiming](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/s/x9GDDTyav1) that Turks are the only nation that has not committed racism.

It is a well-known fact in history, and Croatia, that the Ustase and the NDH (Independent State of Croatia) killed Jews, Serbs, and others in concentration camps during WWII.

They even had a concentration camp for children. [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jastrebarsko_children%27s_camp):

    >The Jastrebarsko children’s camp held Serb children who had been brought there from various areas of the Axis puppet state, the Independent State of Croatia.

    >The children had been captured as a result of massacres and counter-insurgency operations conducted by the genocidal Ustaše-led government, its Axis allies, and other collaborators since the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia and establishment of the NDH.

  4. Most Croats are not but his grandpa definitely was according to him.

  5. The “.de” is a bit sus. Haven’t heard of that source.

  6. Ok, regardless of the historical revisionism of his statement… What actions of Jews in Croatia he doesn’t have to tolerate? Did I miss anything?

  7. Nothing juicer on this sub than uppity Eastern European speaking about controversial stuff.

The gist of the article is Croatia voting against UN resolution on ceasefire in which the guy is arguing that Croatia should not have voted and does not owe anything to Israel.

Yet, as expected, the whole narrative takes over by beating Croatia over WW2 atrocities. Because… you can always pull that “argument” out, anywhere and you will win an imaginary argument.

    Stay classy, (western) Europe.

  8. Well, the nazis didn’t descent from nazis, what’s your point?

  9. ” and I’m not sure what the Germans are so hung up about either…. “

  10. As a Croatian: Please ignore this asshat. The coke is eating his brain.

  11. To explain to everyone the current state of Croatian politics.

President Milanović wakes up in the morning and reads in newspapers the positions of the Croatian Prime Minister and the government on current thing. Whatever they stand for, he chooses the opposite

The government is pro EU and NATO? The president does not agree with that.

The government helps Ukraine? The president claims that Ukraine itself is to blame for the war.

The government sides with Israel? President becomes a fighter for Palestine.

I am almost certain that his views would be the opposite if the Government’s views were different. He doesn’t care about Ukraine or Palestine at all.

The political career of President Milanović needs to be studied. He came to power with the votes of the liberals, and he will win a second term with the votes of the right.

  12. History shouldn’t matter that much, judge the present. Hamas’s actions, Israel’s actions. Civilians suffer now, without help, without a way to escape. It’s truly tragic what is happening there.

  13. This guy is probably good in politics just like he’s good in history

  15. Interesting.
“Unlike German Nazi-run camps, Jasenovac lacked the infrastructure for mass murder on an industrial scale, such as gas chambers. Instead, it “specialized in one-on-one violence of a particularly brutal kind”,[8] and prisoners were primarily murdered with the use of knives, hammers, and axes, or shot.[9]”
