Hi there! I’m a sculpture student at GSA and I’m really interested in washing lines/drying greens around Scotland. I’ve been collecting photos I’ve taken around the country and would like to visit some more. I’m interested in lines that are abandoned or in scenic areas as well as nice examples of old fashioned poles. I was wondering if anyone had any leads of good locations or could share some photos of their own. Thank you!

I’m attaching some examples I’ve taken myself. Any help would be appreciated!

  1. This is such a niche and I look forward to seeing more of it. I would have thought conservation areas would be your best bet – Hyndland, West End of Glasgow, New Town in Edinburgh etc.

  2. I don’t have any pictures- but absolutely love the thought of this!

  3. Off topic for your direct area of interest, but I once renovated a garden which had been the drying green for a cottage which was the local hand laundry. The garden was long and quite narrow, steep sloping, faced due south, and had been planted with holly hedges which acted as drying racks, while the spiky leaves kept the sheets from flying away.

If you look at the back catalogues of local iron foundries, that may give you a guide to which areas might have especially characteristic patterns.
