>Collective responsibility is the convention that all members of the government must publicly support government policy, even if they personally disagree with it.
Publicly posting a letter to the PM against said policy is therefore incompatible with being a ministerial aide. It’s generally the norm to resign when you can’t back the policy – or the PM – in public. He didn’t and so Sunak has sacked him for it.
Collective responsibility can be suspended on certain issues – both Europe referendums for example.
I don’t think he should have been sacked. Surely he’s entitled to his opinion. But his call for a ceasefire… I believe it was in 2021 that Israel and militant groups in Gaza last declared a ceasefire after a ’round’ of fighting. Some reports say that Hamas had been planning the October 7th attacks for around 2 years. So whilst Israel was allowing $150 million a month into Gaza, and increasing the numbers of permits for Gazan’s to work in Israel after that ceasefire, Hamas was planning to massacre Israelis the whole time. There’s a quote about the definition of insanity….
I don’t think cease fire makes any amount of sense for anyone’s agenda or opinion.
The war has progressed to the point of no return and it should be finished to completion.
However the immediate surrender of Hamas and release of hostages is something to be untied about
How is it not suppression of freedom of expression and speech, when no matter where you are, if you say anything neutral and not purely pro-Israel you’re sacked from your job/contract?
For what it’s worth there was a ceasefire on October 6. Maybe a ceasefire where all of Hamas voluntarily gives themselves all but surely that doesn’t seem like a possibility?
welcome to the free world and the so called democratic west. where calling for an end to the massacre of children will have you sacked
