Although there isn’t much concrete data in the article, I am not surprised. Mild levels of racism and xenophobia are intrinsic to the Cypriot culture. Usually people hide them well, but some adults and children sometimes exhibit them openly mainly because of the island mentality, lack of education and a false sense of impunity.
Edit: I’m sharing my experience as a Cypriot of non-Greek origin. I couldn’t care less about denial and downvotes.

Even if you are Greek Cypriot but don’t sound or look like it people will bully you.
However, coming from russia (which holds top position in the “rating”), I find schools in Cyprus quite ok. One of my kids experienced bullying situation initially and the school responded quickly and efficiently. The situation has been fully resolved and my kid later even had friendly relations to one of the “bullies”. I am putting a “bully” in quotes as that was one situation and not a classic movie bully where someone repeatedly harms others on daily basis. I think immediate correction prevented my kid from becoming a victim and prevented other kids from becoming bullies. it was a private school if that matters.
Its not like bullies target vulnerable and different people. Im very suprised, perhaps telling bullies not to be racist will fix this
The education system in general sucks ass I don’t even want to get started on how important is to have religion lessons and not have proper physical education. As much as I like Cyprus I disagree with education system as I’m raising kids here. My wife is a teacher. I get to have both perspectives.
So far it’s going well, teachers has been doing well, kids are doing well at school where they go to and they understand and do well with educational material and they are foreigners that goes to Greek school.
It does not work exactly the way you have described. If you have theoretically perfect lesson plan and perfect schedule with you and your personality is fit for being a teacher does not guarantee your lesson will go fine.
On the other hand you are right, there are teachers who should not be where they are – thankfully I have seen the trend of them being less and less in the system in the past 5 years.
Now about queue – yes, that is absurd right now and it has been working poorly.
I grew up in Cyprus in the early 2000s i was racially bullied, but so was I in Israel .. some of those bullies eventually apologized, others ended up in jail for anti social behavior
Why do people in this thread want to normalise this? It’s so Cypriot to see an issue, think “oh but every country is like this” and never do anything to make us idk, a little less harmful? What is this obsession with every criticism being globalised therefore we don’t need to do anything about it. No integrity, no inclusivity, no making non-Greek speaking Cypriots (who ARE CYPRIOTS, not foreigners even though that shouldn’t change a thing) feel safe.
You’ll condemn homophobic and racist attacks but do absolutely nothing to prevent it, and then wonder why TsC don’t want to unite. Dumb as hell
