  1. Who doesn’t have a bank account in this day and age? Are people in Albania mainly getting cash in hand and storing it at home? Serious question, where do you keep your money if not in a bank account?

  2. 6% in France, very high I think, maybe some couples with only 1 account (and only 1 name on the account) ?

  3. Is there no data for Iceland or did you just accidentally not add it?

From the light area, I am staring hard at France, Spain and Portugal. Was not expecting that. And while I assumed that Slovenia would be similar to the north, the contrast with Italy stands out.

From the dark area, Lithuania, Hungary and Romania are having relatively higher numbers than I would have thought, same can be said for Greece.

  4. It’s quite impossible to live in Finland without a bank account and online banking. Almost all public services use banks for online verification.

Like if you want to make a doctor’s appointment, you go to the healthcare website, log in through your bank and it redirects you back. I don’t know how such verification happens in other countries.

  5. Im from Ukraine and i dont know a single person under 50 without a bank account.
But my grandmother on other hand would make one when she needs to receive money for whatever reason and then destroy her card with scissors after she is done with it. Pretty sure most old people are like that.

  6. Poland/Czech Republic are still years ahead of Germany when it comes to banking. You can basically do everything online and pay with your card almost everywhere. In Poland we even have this super handy tool called Blik, it’s a 6-digit number you can see in your mobile banking app that you can use to pay/withdraw cash without a card, you just enter this number and confirm the operation in the app. After moving to Germany, the fact that I have to carry cash around is one of the most annoying things that’s different from Poland.

  7. It makes sense that teenagers and *really* old people might not have a bank account, yet surely they wouldn’t make up 60% of the population of Albania? Anyway, these percentages do appear to correlate somewhat with the development level of each country.

  8. That’s 5831 people in Denmark. Surely they are the homeless, the mentality handicapped, the poor and the people with bank accounts in Panama and Switzerland?

  9. 15 is too early since the age of majority is 18.
It’d be really interesting to compare this map over a map of unreported employment.

  10. Romanian bere:

1.Rural areas do not have infrastructure for banking.

2.Bank accounts, instead of giving you a profit for the money you lend, they chip away the money.Basically you make more money if you put them in a pillow and let them there.

3.Complete lack of education in economics field.

4.Banking lobby is not as powerful here.People are too poor to be big spenders.

5.In the 90’s there was an overwhelming spirall of bankruptcies of big banks and ponzi schemes that let people without their life savings. After that, you’ll understand why people would have more trust in Satan himself than a banker.

  11. Even though we (Ukraine) is quite low, the banking apps here are vastly superior to those in Western Europe. And you can easily live a year using only Apple Pay, and no cash, because card payments are ubiquitous.

  12. American in Russia here.

Sounds right. A shocking amount of ~40+ y/o do not have accounts.

It’s painfully typical to be asked endlessly to help transfer money to a relative or friend. Our mother makes at least 20+ transfers every month for neighbors to their relatives since they have no bank accounts.

To clarify- even small villages have banks and Tinkof is a massive online bank so this is not an access issue and from my decade plus with Russia it does not appear even slightly connected to “not trusting those bankers, better under the mattress”…. But why? Honestly not too sure.

  13. Bank account is the most important identifier of a person here.

Majority of people not having a bank account is mind breaking to me.

  14. I simply cannot belive the spanish percentage. Literally, you cannot receive government money without a bank account. I assume they are speaking either of children or foreigners.

  15. In sweden it is pretty much impossible to exist without a bank account. Most stores dont even accept legal tender.
