  1. >“A person does not need to be of the Catholic faith to gain the qualification and religious affiliation is not something asked of candidates in interviews,” says Alan Hynes, the partnership’s chief executive. “Candidates are asked to demonstrate a knowledge of the Catholic ethos.”

    So… No?

  2. I think it would be much better to remove religion from the curriculum entirely and replace it with a more proactive form of citizenship and personal development; by that I mean something akin to the model done in some Far Eastern countries where the importance of personal responsibility to the self, personal space, and the wider community is taught through having kids clean their classrooms, hallways, picking up litter within the vicinity, and doing a little DIY or outdoor maintenance when the weather allows for it

  3. Ireland can’t call itself a developed country as long as the Catholic Church controls most schools. This country’s obsession with keeping the status quo is nuts

  4. It’s illegal to advertise for a certain religion only under the Employment Equality Acts. Religion is one of the 9 grounds

  5. I’d say it’s probably offputting to people of other faiths or none that most schools are Catholic ethos and that might influence their career choices

  6. Sometimes the parents in these schools can be dead set against a teacher/staff member being of a different or no faith.

They could be the best-fitting teacher on the panel for the school and because they’re “not protestant” or “not catholic,” there will be a campaign against the appointment of that teacher or staff member. Sometimes it even happens to appointees to the board of management.

    Proper Mammy Burke stuff.

  7. Our eldest school is Catholic. They were selected to see about changing to an ETB or ET. They opted against it.
The church they are linked to, the priest from there is young but an asshole. So arrogant! Our son didn’t make his communion and our youngest won’t either (plus he’s not christened anyway)
The secondary we want them to go to will be impossible to get into as his school isn’t a feeder and no family int he school.
The new secondary school combined of the three Catholic ones from the area is huge and two of the three are fucking terrible.

  8. Betteridge’s law (of headlines) is an adage that states “Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no.”

  9. This reminds me of the headlines in trash publications where they pose a ludicrous question and you have to read to the very bottom of a bunch of bullshit to find out the answer is always “no” with usually a bit of a “but who knows if that will change in the future” to half justify the bunch of bullshit you had to read.

“Is neymar about to sign for shamrock rovers?”

    “Did tellytubbies build the pyramids?”

  10. You don’t have to be Catholic to be a teacher, 99% of schools only care about your degree and nothing else
