Good, I wonder how many people have died because of those monsters just for being disabled, mentally or physically. And I wonder how the people working for them have any self awareness at all. Personally I wouldn’t care if a few skivers fooled the system as long as all the genuine claimants were looked properly.
Didn’t they once refuse someone disability payment on the grounds that their aputated leg wasn’t permanent…
Got to remember tho it was Labour that started this off by bringing in ATOS for ESA assessments.
Good. ATOS healthcare was probably the worst organisation I ever had to deal with. Not once did they give me the impression that they cared about people’s health.
“My instinct is they ought to be stripped of it. But I’ve not looked at that side of the brief carefully at all.” -> so nothing
What sort of an article is this “could be stripped” doesn’t mean “will be stripped”. All on the throw away comments of a shadow minister of welfare.
Put it in a manifesto then shout about it or gtfo.
IIRC Nick Clegg’s bunch said they’d dump tuition fees if they got in. Didn’t happen.
I loathe the disability assessments services. My husband is disabled and has been through and through the hoops. It has aged him. Last time, they finally realised he has a lifetime disability that will only get worse, and his award now runs for ten years. I think he only got that because of Covid. Someone phoned (from their home) late one evening to do the assessment and happened to catch us when the carer was here and finally understood our situation.
After ATOS left due to the huge backlash from them paying people to reject claimants, the new company hired to do this job is an American company that has a track record of defrauding the US government and failing to fulfil contracts.
Could? How about Should? Or Must? Or Will?

When are Labour going to get off the fence and start actually standing for something definite that people can get behind?
Fuck me…. That would save *so much money*.
If we went back to drs signing people off with no questions beyond that it is mind boggling how much money we’d save.
I despair at how some conservatives have been tricked into thinking that the benefits changes were a “tightening of the belt”, they’re often so surprised when I explain that the new system for disability payments is more expensive and has the UN calling us monsters. And they usually come back with “But I knew this guy who said he had a bad back and did windows locally cash in hand’
Sure, ok. Always gonna be fraudsters. Tories used that hatred to pad their wallets and the wallets of their mates.
IIRC the main issue is the DWP is horribly underfunded so as a matter of policy they encourage assessors to reject as many claims as possible because if they assessed all claims fairly they wouldn’t be able to give everyone benefits.
I don’t like the word, could.
Why not cancel the contracts and fund local councils to carry out the work. Local people dealing with local people.
Dealing with it at all in a large corporate structure ensures the people and empathy part is removed when it should be central.
Be a bit pointless having a Labour government if they didn’t.
My mother suffers from arthritis which is everywhere now and has had a bad stroke which had left her basically screwed. Dam she cannot even wrap Christmas presents because she’s forgotten how. And these asshats have said she’s perfectly ok. Well I found out that they don’t even check your medical records anymore and are able to disregard previous letters off doctors and specialists as well even if the patient is well and truly fucked.
People are on another planet if they think anything will change under a Labour government. Being the opposition and being in power and 2 very different things. It’s easy to make grand statements, it’s another to actually put them into action while governing an entire country.
They can’t even win an election but people are convinced the UK will become a utopia under them?
I wonder if these firms don’t worry about suffering from reputational damage.
But then realized they are part of the Government milk-train, without exception.
Not going to happen or something worse will be put in its place
I’ve seen some shockers, from 0 points in assessments to 20+ on appeal.
Aggressive agents turning up at appeals to try and undermine the appealant, speaking out of turn.
The process itself is trauma inducing before you even see a human being. No person with a disability wants to think about their worst day or the extent of what they’ve lost.
It can be a daily psychological battle to find positivity.
With this system fixed, you can welcome back a voter LabourUK.
Well, yes.. but the next election isn’t until 2024 so..
I have friends who’ve been on the receiving end of shitty DWP disability assessments. It’s not really fit for purpose.
When is there going to be a serious effort to combat wage theft?
Thank god Labour won’t be getting into no 10 anytime soon
Sounds good – you simply cannot ethically run such essential public services for profit.
Where is the ‘growth’ to be found except in ever greater human misery?
Labour started the assessment regime. Would only be right that they roll it back. Doubtful though, likely to be more broken promises.
Oh no! Won’t someone think of the Tory donors that will lose taxpayers money!
All three main parties, shady as anything, Tories at least have the decency to be openly cruel.
I have no easy answers but having been involved in politics, both local and national, I don’t trust any of them.
I once helped someone get PIP awarded through the courts. Judge said in no uncertain written terms that the DWP MUST pay the award for the next three years. Two years in, the DWP did a reassessment to ensure that the correct help was being given. Then stopped 100 percent of PIP. You are on your own and good luck!
Labour will change nothing.

All main parties controlled and owned by big donors and big business, the little guy has no chance.
Nice idea (these outsourced assessments are really bad) but “could be” sounds like someone flying a kite rather than an actual policy.
I feel like stories like this are just to try and damage labours lead in the polls. Dwp is already messed up
