Nice article, seems to be more directed to an American audience, but covers the topic well.
Although this sentence:
“two teams who didn’t finish in the top two places of the second division that season play a winner-take-all match for the right to earn the final promotion spot to the first tier”
This isn’t quite true as each league has “play-offs” at the end of the season.
The championship for example, 3rd will play 6th and 4th will play 5th (over two legs) then the winner of those two will go to the play off final… so technically you can get promoted if you finish 6th.
