I mean.. theres 2 sides to the coin here, in the bad way now if you commit a crime your dna is now all over the place and surely drugmaker is gonna sell it to the police… But on the other hand they can now use peoples dna and statistics etcetc to make more suitable medication for the diseases that plague us…
And next comes the cost saving analysis for the insurance companies to figure out what they won’t cover at a personalized level
Are consumers aware that their genetic data would be commercialized/sold? Why are consumers even pating for this when 23andMe should be the one making any payments.
Plus, they were recently in the news, with their data being hacked and stolen.
That’s why I never gave my DNA to companies like that…
I knew sooner or later they’d come for my DNA, and once you sign that RELEASE… they now own your DNA… NOT YOU!!!
So, they’ll never get my DNA… for anything like that… not even testing for genetic diseases… because I own my BODY… not some place that bought it from a shady company. Jerks…
I thought all their shit got leaked?!
I’m sure you can find all that data for way cheaper in some sort of dark web exchange…
If you have a rare hereditary condition then they can make a test for it and patent your genes in it.
They don’t have to find a cure for it though. It might not be profitable enough. Their patent on your genes might prevent someone else from doing it.
I hope it advances science
It’s similar to posting a picture on the internet. I willingly submitted my DNA but, it’s safe to say, I have no control over it now. Yet, I knew what I was doing and I’d be surprised if anyone thought otherwise.
Lets’ do 23 n Me. It’ll be fun, they said.
Fuck Capitalism.
And just deleted my account. You didn’t put in on this mannnn!!!
You are the product AND you paid to give them the DNA.
Everyone nowadays needs to remember that they are the end product.
We consumers/customers need to get our cut of any profits made by 23andme for selling our data. Who’s with me?
Big scam 23 and me had everyone .01% ashkenazi 🤣
Directed genetic viruses incoming….
1. It’s anonymized data being shared for RESEARCH purposes. Will the drug companies use some of the data to figure out how to make more money? Of course. But it’ll be from developing treatments for common ailments or to push medicine towards the personalized care that is the next critical step in advancing treatment practices (especially for illnesses such as cancer).
2. People who use 23 and me are given the opt in/opt out option much like how people are given the option to sign up for or decline marketing/notification emails whenever an account is created on a website. Only 80% of people who used the service opted in. So if you used the service and opted out, your data is not included.
I think this is actually a great idea. As long as the data is anonymised, drug companies would have access to a wider range of dna models to run simulations against.
It was only a matter of time. If you didn’t see this coming years ago, you have to be blind.
It’s inherently easily identifiable data, even when it’s anonymized. How else do you think you can identify long lost relatives in a sea of random people…
The FBI and police agencies have been mining these databases for years and catching people by using their relatives.
Surprise! The thing everyone said probably wouldn’t happen happens. It’s not like the next step is your insurance company dropping you because you’re too high a risk for something like cancer because you wanted to know why your “dad’s” nose looked different than yours.
Tbf if you ever considered giving your DNA information to a shady internet business, you probably deserve the fuckery that’s about to come from this.
This is why I still haven’t done one of these
I saw this coming a fucking decade ago. They sold their kits at a loss waiting for this day.
Glad I never did it.
Cant wait to see it being acquired by insurance companies to deny you coverage based on genetic predispositions.
And of course the rightwing who are already qouting Nazi(and many othet fascist movements since the Nazis) talking points exactly and openly.
Weaponizing science and medicine while using hate, religion and government is a recipe for disaster.
Would the far right use genetic information to target minorities they hate? Abso-fuckin-lutely. They openly fantasize about it online for all to see.
I worry most about an insane government run by far right crazies acquiring this info to target minorities.
Just a reminder:
“They are sexual deviants, they are preying on our children trying to corrupt, tempt and seduce them to their Godless ways” ~ the Nazi’s
They said this targeting the LGBTQ people right before rounding them up and shoving them into the same concentration camps the jews would later be sent.
The victims were known as “The Pink Triangles of the Holocaust”
Its also the exact same message almost word for word the Republicans have been pushing as hard as they can as of late and have only been getting more extreme.
I really dont want to see what they would do with that data.
Why? Can’t they just hack it and get the details that way
23aaaaaaand it’s gone.
This world is turning more and more dystopia
One day, your medical insurance will be priced based on your genetics. If you choose not to provide your DNA, you gonna pay a higher premium. If you willingly provide your DNA to the insurer and you have markers for bad things like a propensity for cancer, your gonna pay more. If you don’t you gonna pay less.
My partner and I have been given DNA kits as gifts twice, Gave them away, twice. This is one of the reasons why.
There it is.
This is exactly the reason I avoided every one of these companies. Time to cash out on everyone’s personal info they willingly gave.
It’s my DNA information where’s my cut?
– Sister : Why not take a DNA test
– Me : because privacy
– Sister : you’re a paranoid
– Me : ok I’ll take it.
And now, fucking Google, CIA and insurance all have my DNA. Great.
In the context of the article, this ship sailed 5 years ago –
>GSK Plc will pay 23andMe Holding Co. $20 million for access to the genetic-testing company’s vast trove of consumer DNA data, **extending a five-year collaboration** that’s allowed the drugmaker to mine genetic data as it researches new medications.
Oh OK, they are more than free to have it if it increases the quality of our medications.
Millions? With an M? Is that all?
Must be a typo
You’re doomed!!! (to receive ads relevant to your genetic disposition of health)
If you fell for 23 and me, they’re going to let advertisers serve you ads that are relevant to your body!! Instead of seeing irrelevant advertisements, they are going to show you products that are liked by people who are similar to you!
Ladies, you may never see an ad for ED ever again. Men, you may never be ‘accidentally’ sent the Victoria’s Secret catalog.
What gives?!
The worse this situation gets (privacy breaches, companies selling your genetic info for profit etc) the happier I am that I never bought into this nonsense and never took the test.
How is ownership of your genome not protected by law?
Wait till insurance companies get this
i’ve never used this service and they essentially have my dna thanks to siblings 😀
Insurance will start denying individual people once they know exactly which recessive genes the individuals have
Didn’t I read recently 23andMe got hacked and some of its data stolen. For Sale on the dark Web now???
