Statement from the Mater Hospital, please use other services for non urgent issues. Lengthy wait times for anything other than emergencies due to staff shortage and Covid-19

  1. Hospitals: Don’t come to us unless it’s urgent, please see your GP.

GP: Sorry you can’t see a doctor unless you have a negative COVID test.

No test appointments available and they won’t accept antigen test results.

GP: If you’re worried just go straight to the hospital.

    Hospitals: Aaah we’re overwhelmed.

Seriously… WHAT kind of carry on IS this?

  2. We’re pretty close to a major tragedy occurring in maternity. Many medical issues and procedures can either wait or treated elsewhere but babies don’t wait.

In a major hospital there were only 4 midwives on a shift recently, so 4 babies being delivered per midwife at the same time.

Edit – Source: sister was one of the 4 midwives

  3. Friend of mine tried to book a gp appointment the other day cause they were shitting blood.

Their gp has a receptionist who just repeats the line “please email them and they will look at it” or its goes to voicemail with the same message.

Its been 3 days and still no response from the gp. Friend in the meantime has been admitted to hospital after having to wait 18 hours in A&E.

Its no wonder some people go straight to A&E when they cant get a simple response from their gp.

  4. Young lad on my team hurt his hand after trying to stop some scumbag stealing his bike on a Saturday afternoon at the top of Grafton Street. After 4 hours waiting in mater hospital A&E he asked approximately how long more it might be .. they said at least another 8 hours so he decided to leave. They wrapped it up and sent him on his way. He told me on the Monday and I told him our work health insurance has a rapid injury clinic in the mater hospital. He went there, was seen right away, x-rayed and sorted out for a fractured finger, all covered by the health insurance. I’m sure many people with private health insurance could go to minor injury clinics rather than clogging up our A&E’s. Surely the receptionist should ask if they have that option or they could put a sign up advising people rather than making them wait 12 hours, or sending them home with an injury

  5. In all fairness though, there are some people out there who rock up to a hospital with the slightest ailment , that could be treated with a quick Google search. They’re not helping.

  6. Was meant to have an appointment in the Mater on the 6th of January but it’s been changed to a phone appointment now.

  7. Have a few family members who are medical staff in hospitals (St. James’ and Beaumont) and the hours the HSE need are fucking insane right now. We couldn’t do anything for New Years because they ***had*** to be in hospital today. I think we’re at the stage where we have to accept everyone is going to get it, stop the long drawn out mandatory isolations and only stay out of work if you’re sick and have symptoms.

  8. Doctors need to cop on. Do your job. Or get another job. This is literally what you sign up for. Front line work in an emergency should you ever be unlucky enough to be practising in such a time. Whingebags.

  9. This is such a reminder of when I went to hospital due to a bike accident. I have a broken foot and a broken arm but didn’t bang my head so was fully conscious. Rxpect there to be much worse people there than me, but I ended up being the person in A and E people were staring at…

I know you can’t tell what’s wrong with people by looking my at them, but literally everyone looked fine. It is such a waste of time for health care providers to examine someone who should have gone to a gp or pharmacist especially since I’m going into the field.
