>The embargo was imposed in 1960 following the revolution led by Fidel Castro and the nationalization of properties belonging to U.S. citizens and corporations.
Wonder what the chances of ending the embargo would be if they returned the property.
The world would love to trade with Cuba, unfortunately US likes to dictate other countries with who to trade by applying secondary sanctions on third parties who engage in transactions with Cuba which don’t involve US at all.
It’d be nice if that was actually a meaningful declaration that carried weight against the US
And nothing is going to change for the 31st straight year.
Democrats care too much what Cubans in Florida think
Goodbye UN. Keep digging the hole deeper.
That’d be cool if anybody actually gave a shit about the UN.
UN bureaucrats definitely have a lot of time on their hands.
It is a ridiculous embargo.
>He said the U.S. embargo has imposed “the most cruel and long-lasting unilateral coercive measures that have ever been applied against any country” and that it constitutes “a crime of genocide” and an “ act of economic warfare during times of peace.”
I don’t agree with the embargo but nobody can force the US to conduct trade with a country it doesn’t want to trade with. That is an internal, domestic decision that nobody else in the world has any say in.
and before anyone says it, no, the US embargo against Cuba is not forced onto anyone else. Common misconception. Countries and companies are free to trade with both the US and Cuba, but they can not use US infrastructure (i.e; ports) to facilitate trade with Cuba.
And yet the Arab embargo on Israel was always okay.
Weird.
That embargo is just embarrassing. Fuck Florida being a swing state.
Why do we even continue to have an embargo, exactly? Cold war is over, and Cuba doesn’t have armed forces we need to worry about.
I mean Cuba can stop being a Russian/Chinese aligned dictatorship at any time. Xi or Putin can bail them out if they want since they can freely trade with them.
Most of the USSR aligned states realigned after the cold war and became allies of the US or just normalized relations, but Cuba is one of the few hold outs that still clings to daddy Russia and now China.
I doubt anything is going to change in the future tbh, if this survived the collapse of the USSR yearly attempts by the UN won’t change things.
The vast majority of Americans support ending the embargo…just a small minority of Cuban-Americans supporting its continuation and everyone in DC keeps bending the knee.
The UN can’t force us to trade with a communist nation
Considering who sits on the human rights council over there… a vote of condemnation from the UN is a badge of honor these days.
What is even the point of the UN
And reddit will continue to complain about this, and grass is green, and the sky is blue. What else is new?
I hate how articles on UNGA votes don’t link to the actual voting record on the UNGA website, which is so difficult to navigate.
[Here it is](https://digitallibrary.un.org/record/4025763?ln=en)
It’s kind of bullshit that anyone but Americans can vacation there. I get they haven’t changed their policies but they’re no longer a Russian satellite state so their threat to us is non-existent. There’s no Cuban military or economic terrorists.
So I don’t get why the world is mad at us. We don’t like you and you don’t like us, we don’t trade with you and boom done
Idk.
Can someone break it down barney style for me about why it’s still enforced? K thanks
We really should reopen economic ties with Cuba. Should be a win-win scenario.

The policy makes no sense. However, by now, with so many Cuban voters in a big swing state (most of them hostile to Cuba), it is political suicide in the US to reverse this policy.
This is a pretty off-topic question kinda. But can anyone give me a serious answer as to why Israel consistently sides with the US on these UN resolutions?
I’m not alluding to anything or making a stance. This is genuine curiosity. Preferably impartial answers.
Edit:
[I found this link very informative if anyone is curious.](https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1949v06/d997)
I’m pretty sure Cuba wants it this way.
Embargo gets lifted, people are going to start investing in Cuba. Pretty soon all that foreign investment will just render Cuba no longer Cuban.
Alternative to that is we lift the embargo, cuba tries to keep the US out, and you end up with a gunboat diplomacy scenario.
Also the US did take a bunch of steps toward normalizing relations with Cuba until a Russian puppet rolled all that back, so its fairly rich.
Aww is the UN sad we aren’t listening to them? Boo hoo
The UN is just a bunch of privileged fucks collecting paychecks
I don’t really see the problem here. If Cuba decides to completely fuck up relations with the US then why do they expect good trading deals to come from that?
So why is a lack of trade with the US the thing that’s holding Cuba back?
They can still trade with the rest of the world. The US is powerful, but not that powerful.
Why does US still continue the embargo? It makes no sense. We are not in the Cold War anymore, Cuba will have no nuclear weapons.
The UN: You’ll be shot for this!
The US: Nah, more like condemned. I’ve been condemned before.
“We, the United Nations, condemn the US economic embargo on Cuba again. Now, please welcome the chair of our Human Rights Council Social Forum, Iran!”
Trading with Cuba would be the fastest demise of a commy country ever.
$$$$$$$$$.
If only Matthew Perry hadn’t died in that jacuzzi he could’ve got in his ironclad to sail to the US to demand they open trade
And so do the vast majority of Americans I’d say. But look how much difference that has made….
As an American this is so stupid, lets let them be our friends…. I also want those cigars
