Most British people hold positive view of immigration, survey reveals

  1. I always find it annoying when newspapers don’t provide a link to the source article, and to be honest, more than a little suspicious that they are cherry picking the data to support their political viewpoint – what have they got to hide otherwise.

  2. Immigration from where, by whom, and how much?

Immigration covers a very wide spectrum, and simply telling me that people hold positive views of it really doesn’t tell me very much.

  3. I’ve been seeing more and more anti-immigration on this sub and /r/ukpolitics recently.

I don’t know whether it’s some kind of brigading or just a bunch of edge-lords jerking each other off, but it’s always good to be reminded that the British public doesn’t agree with them.

There are upsides and downsides to immigration, but the upsides massively outweigh the downsides. Immigration has made modern Britain what it is. You can even see that the areas with the most immigration like London are the most dynamic, the most successful and the most desirable to live in.

  4. I’ve never taken any poll or survey or been asked. So how do they make these articles that cover whole of UK?

  5. People have very little problem with immigration. It is illegal immigration that people have a problem with.

  6. I love the mass immigration of people who never integrate and see women / LGBT people as second class citizens /s

  7. Yea when we have adequate infrastructure for the people here and housing first and immigrants are told they need to integrate and not just live in enclaves of there own .

  8. I’m fine with immigration. I’m not fine with uncontrolled boarders, illegal immigration, and those who don’t integrate with us.

  9. No, I read on reddit that everyone in the UK was a fascist , Nazi racist. /s

  10. I don’t doubt it’s true but that doesn’t mean “most British people support immigration levels of 1.5 million a year” or some of the other crazy figures we have seen/are expecting recently. The negative I see or hear most people express is the sheer scale. Not immigration itself. Never has been.

  11. i swear i saw an article by the same paper the other day that said that most brits have a negative view of immigration?? am i tripping?

  12. I am an immigrant and we should definitely Ban new immigrants.

You have me what else do you need

  13. Doubtful or they wouldn’t have voted for britexit and the tories over Corbyn.

  14. Does the survey differentiate between skilled immigrants and asylum seekers? Papers like guardian are notorious for conflating both. Like saying immigrants are a net positive to the economy when it applies only to skilled immigrants.

  15. But the daily mail and the Home Secretary told me British people have had enough of immigrants and foreigners…. Not including her or her parents and the foreign registry l of the daily mail of course

  16. I think its fine when its individuals. Move to a white british area assimilate and hopefully marry a Brit and have kids. The issue comes when they arrive and move to an area surrounded by their own people and never have to assimilate. You end up with small colony.

  17. Immigration is fine if it’s done right.

Sure come here and work and merge with our country. Not bring your countries problems with you and then start your own neighbourhoods with just your country’s people living there, that’s just not diverse.

Check the people that come before they arrive so you don’t let known rapists and murders in, just control it better.

  18. There’s no point being ideological about immigration. You need what you need. If immigration bothers you, have more children and convince others to do the same. Don’t want to or can’t afford it? Well then, immigration it is.

  19. Immigration has its ups and downs – on the one hand it can bring productivity and economic boosts. On the other hand I married an Italian and am now told off a lot.

  20. ‘Immigration’ is too much of a broad term. I think people hold very different views depending on whether you’re talking about skilled migration, family reunification, irregular migration etc. I think most people recognise we need skilled workers and families should be allowed to live together. Irregular migration is the tricky one and where people’s views tend to clash.

  21. as a white immigrant who has seen many facial expressions go sour upon hearing my accent, I have my doubts about this survey. perhaps they only interviewed Londoners.

on the one hand, I get it. uk seems to have a major immigration issue on its hands. on the other, I’m just trying to live a good life with my English husband. there wasn’t another way for us to do it without one of us immigrating and he already had a solid career here. it made more sense for us, but I don’t find it very welcoming here just yet.

  22. “Immigration” is just a word used to describe people moving from one country to another. In itself, it does not say anything about the TYPE of immigrant, including whether they are a net contributor to the economy or a net drain – and whether they arrived legally or illegally.

For me personally, people who immigrate legally, and are a net contributor, are a positive.

Those who arrive illegally, and are a net drain, are negative.

So it depends entirely on what type of immigration you’re talking about.

  23. In 2002 fewer than one in 10 respondents believed the UK should admit “many” immigrants of a “different race or ethnic group to the majority”; by 2022 this had increased to more than a third (34%). The proportion believing no immigrants in this category should be allowed to enter the UK fell from 15% to 3% over the same period.

This is probably the relevant part. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who is flat against any sort of immigrant.

  24. If I was asked the question, it would be hard to answer.

I live in a small town pop of 11k.

Every Friday, a coach pulls up into Aldi and roughly 30-40 Asian & Eastern Europeans hop off, sprint into town, and all queue up at ATMs withdrawing money (some also go into Aldi).

Then about an hour later, all hop back on the coach and it drives off.

Our town is surrounded by farms, so naturally I assume they’re just pickers. However sometimes when I’m driving about, you see a large bunch of people just walking in the road because they have no other forms of transport.

People on FB (yeah yeah I know it’s meme’d) have raised concerns around people following their kids, or parents have said that someone was asking if they could hold their baby.

Also, I’ve worked in public services next to a continental street once and during one time, we were required by government to ask everybody who came in, how long have they lived in the UK for.

Over about 6 months, I would say 70% of the Eastern Europeans who had come in, couldn’t speak a word of English and had lived in the country for over 6 years. The earliest I had was 2 weeks lol

But then I’ve also worked with plenty of people who aren’t from the UK and have settled well in the UK.

So to answer the question, immigration has it’s ups and downs. It’s not a solid answer of “Oh I’m positive on immigration”.

  25. Housing problems. Rents are skyrocket high. But fuck em bring more people instead of making it better for those who are already here and support them to get more babies.

Young generations will own fuck all. Everything going to be rented or subscription based. And few already rich people will get even more power. The future looks bright

  26. Therefore I hold a positive view on the UK housing market. 📈

  27. The Guardian speaking on behalf of the silent majority I see.

  28. Immigration is fine, illegal economic migration, is not.

  29. The Guardian at it again. Wonder why they didn’t share the source for the poll.
The notion that “most” people are against mass immigration in this country is a fucking joke. The tories have kept their seat for a long time on the promise they would reduce it. Immigration was a key factor in the Brexit vote.
Total nonsense. Every day a new clickbait article from this fucking rag on this sub.
