I was a kid when Mette Marit and Håkon got married, so my recollection of the controversy is hazy. She had a kid, of course, but the main thing I remember was the vague implications of a dark and seedy past of scary drugs and weird sex.

What was it even about? Was she just a normal girl with normal experiences, who got slandered by a few conservative busy-bodies and the greedy tabloids or was there something to it all? It seems impossible to get any concrete information in hindsight, just vague references to *her past.*

  1. Typical norwegian moral panic. This was early 90s, every young person in Norway was going to raves. It was new and exiting. With this new culture came new drugs like Ecstasy. It was scary for the older generation. Mette Marit partook in this new culture and was chastised for it. She had to distance herself from her past in the most humiliating way. In Norway it is traditionally assumed you are a drug addict if you experiment with drugs. This mixup is behind the latest controversy (your screenshot). Times have changed and this attitude is no longer ok.
