Good afternoon everyone

I just received today a letter from Finanzamt asking about 2022 tax declaration.

Honestly, I am not sure why I have been sent this. I work only one Full time job. I have smapl investments but they are all in red (started doing it in 2023 not 2022, and with a German broker).

I did my 2021 tax return because i started working mid year and it made sense to do it, however this year not much.

To my understanding I should not be obligated to submit it. And honestly it weird that I got this letter.

It says the letter has been created automatically, does people usually receive such letters or should I be more concerned.

I have already sent a message to the FA via ELSTER, but I wanted to see what the sub thinks or if it is a letter sent to everyone who had done tax returns before

Thank you for your help 🙂

  1. It’s a reminder telling you to file your taxes in case you are obligated to do so. If you aren’t, you don’t need to.

If you are not sure if you are, ask a tax consultant or call the FA.

  2. If you don’t have to declare, you can usually just call the Finanzamt number at the top and tell them. They will usually tell you that they will note this in the system and you don’t need to declare for 2022.

It is quiet common to get this letter when you have declared once although it does not always happen.

  3. The letter mentions several times that it applies to you only if you are actually required to do a tax declaration. Plus, read the last sentence just before “Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Ihr Finanzamt” at the bottom and do what it says.

  4. Usually, it is quiet smart to do one every year. 1) It is only much work the first time, except you have big changes. 2) Most times you get money back.
