The right has it right. Being anything other than straight in America can be hazardous to your health. Your neighbour is gay you say? Who fucking cares?….Mind your own goddamn business and if you think you have the moral high ground to be running the lives of others, start with a hard look at yourself first.

This is my hometown, while I live 3000 miles away now I can confidently say that the people his age are definitely transphobic and he got dragged through Facebook by a bunch of people from the town. A lot of people in their 20s are backing him up and it seems a good amount of people are in support of him now that he is dead. Awful situation

If one of my loved ones was outed as trans I would just say “You go girl!” Or “That’s what’s up, bro” and that would be the end of it.

I lived in Phenix City, AL (Lee County) from 99-03 while in the Army. I was a chaplains’ asst in the Army and was constantly faced with closeted gay men (soldiers and civilians) confessing to me about the rampant underground gay scene in which they were involved. I am saddened to see the culture there still oppresses LGBTQ+ people. I hope that I was a small beacon of light and hope for all those with whom I was trusted with their secrets. Such an unnecessary tragedy – for this man, all those before him, and all those that will follow this path.
Way too many of us are dead and too many will continue to die. It breaks my heart.

Hi, Smiths is where I grew up and went to school. Bubba Copeland was deeply loved by our community. This event was SOLELY caused by the reporter with 1819 who published the article about Mayor Copeland and his online activities. The blood is on his hands and I hope he suffers with that guilt every. fucking. day. Mayor Copeland told this piss poor reporter he did not want this part of his life to be publicized. And this motherfucker outed him anyways. What a fucking dumpster fire of so called journalism. He has ruined a family. And I feel sick to my stomach. There is a lot of outrage in the community right now.
One thing to learn from this is that THIS IS WHY WE DON’T OUT PEOPLE.

As someone who lives not far from this town, I personally know a few who have worked for him at our little country store that he owned and operated. Bubba was a great guy and it’s sickening that he couldn’t lead a private life and be comfortable in his own skin. This is a tragedy in my eyes and others, however, in this right wing dominant state and county, some will see it as some form of “miracle”.
This is disgusting and I feel those who outed him should face some sort of legal consequence, although that may not be possible, because this poor man did not deserve this. Rest in peace.
He wasn’t even Trans, nor was he transitioning. He created an online persona as a creative outlet to help him disassociate. Copeland was demonized into committing real life suicide on count of a FAKE COSPLAY whose interests were: ‘Smiling, Clothes, and Shoes.’

Seriously, it’s hard enough being out and queer in more tolerant places– there are still maniacs, bullies and fanatics regardless of where you are, and generally there’ll be a few in your family too. But at least there are places you can go where it’s safe, and a (usually) supportive community.
But to force someone to internalize all that oppression to the point where they think their only option is suicide is just obscene.
