My mother in law was having a clear out, and inside this tin were loads of those fuzzy promotional stickers with googly eyes and ribbons.

This is still probably a special bumper Christmas size tin, but even so, is a great example of shrinkflation.

  1. That’s a beast! Wonder how much they’d charge for it today.

  2. All I remember from these was not being allowed to eat the green triangles, because mum loved them. I think I was 19 before I tried one. Wasn’t worth the wait

  3. Take it to your local refill station. We’ve got one at John Lewis and they charge £12.50 to refill your tin!

  4. Seems it would cost about £20.75 to refill that at Tesco now

  5. They were not a fiver or less though iirc. I remember them being pretty expensive, definitely a once a year treat.

  6. How much would it have cost?

    I found a 1981(?) advert showing a price (for 5lbs which is a bit less than 2.5kg) for £8.95. That’s equivalent to £33 in today’s money.

£4 for 600g in Tesco (could be cheaper elsewhere) so I could fill the 1980s advert tin (and then some) for £16. In fact I could fill it twice over and still have change from £33.

  7. I remember back in the 90, Roses tins and quality street had lots of chocolates in. and the chocolate tasted better in the 90s
