  1. As he absolutely should, it’s completely unacceptable for an MP to tell a member of the public “go back to your country”.

  2. Even putting aside the 1950s nature of an old duffer telling people to “go back home”…

Even putting aside the fact that Stewart was defending the Bahraini authorities and telling an opponent of the Bahraini regime to “go home” to the country that would persecute him for his words…

Bob Stewart represents the party who have been in Government for 13 years. He has been an MP for all of that time. If there are any crimes still on the books after 13 years, he should bloody well follow them.

If he can tell us, “this is the law of the land and the state will take action against you if you break it” then he absolutely has to follow it himself. Otherwise he should obviously be standing down as an MP rather than just resigning the whip.

  3. He shouldn’t have had to ask. It should have been taken away.

  4. Another lying, thieving, racist down, how many more tories hold power?

  5. Allegations that the word ‘racist’ has been diluted and distorted into nonsense are as trite as ever (as an ‘ist’-formation without concrete meaning, unlike e.g. dentist, phlebotomist etc. it was nonsense to begin with), but I cannot help thinking that it is stretching it beyond breaking point to say that telling the director of advocacy at the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy to relocate to that august country – a “great place”, by the defendant’s own description – is ‘racist’ or even ‘abuse’.

But perhaps it is Mr. Stewart who ought to go ‘back to Bahrain’, as he thinks it’s such a ‘great place’. Who knows: it might even lack such ridiculous laws as this. Based on Grayson81’s comment, however, it seems if you’re not persecuted for your words in one place, you are in the other.

  6. Any competent leader would have removed it the second the guilty verdict was returned

  7. So many tories have been ousted as racists yet the Labour Party still has the antisemitic tarnish from corbyn. Could someone eli5?
