Kalinouski Regt. Volunteer (Belarusians fighting alongside Ukraine) using a shotgun to defend his position against small drones, it’s not a easy thing, buts the principle is the same of hunt a duck 🦆(Useful? I think yes)

  1. Until that asshole dog pops up and starts laughing at you 😡

  2. Assuming that the kinetic energy of the projectiles is sufficient to kill or wound a duck, it could also be sufficient to damage civilian drones like DJI’s.
Sure, there are differences. It would be interesting to know what part of bird has to be hit to be most effective (head, neck, body). Birds have feathers that should absorb only little kinetic energy. Drones in contrast are made of fiber reinforced plastics (maybe not all covers).
Also the effect of the projectiles on rotating propellers would be interesting.
I can imagine that it would have a nice effect, if the fully charged lithium battery is hit.
DJIs should normally not be subject to ballistic testing, I guess.
One nice effect is of course the spread of the projectiles.
Meanwhile there should be enough scrap from drones to assess on what distance a shot is still effective.
    TIL:
“… Shotguns have an effective range of about 35 m (38 yd) with buckshot, 45 m (49 yd) with birdshot, 100 m (110 yd) with slugs, and well over 150 m (160 yd) with saboted slugs in rifled barrels. …”

So maybe 12ga with birdshot would be an idea. Maybe steel would work better than lead, maybe split shot.
There are probably already youtube videos about experiments with bird/buckshot.
I just watched a video about decades-old Russian shotgun ammunition with a dud rate of 50 percent (taofledermaus channel).

  3. I hope he has some bigger buck shots (5-8mm) so the reaching is much further. More smaller grain would not help if they lost most energy after 60-80m.

  4. Used to work in an industry where we would have to bring down drones.

Gave everyone shotguns with bird shot cause it only takes 1 bb to drop a DJI.

Im surprised more shotguns aren’t carried for the suicide FPVs.

  5. I have wondered since the beginning why they do t use shotguns. Seems obvious if the drones are low enough.

  6. Canada sent a lot of shot guns and people laughed at us, they are great for clearing trenches.

  7. That’s some incentive not to miss with a kamikaze drone coming at you.

  8. Finally, all these years of playing Duck Hunt will pay off.

  9. I was just thinking about how useful a shotgun with birds hot or buckshot might be for anti-drone duty. I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one.

  10. A little like shooting clay pigeons, maybe? Not a terrible idea. You do what you gotta do.

  11. I wonder if something like a flechette shot made from something dense like lead or tungsten could help close the gap.

  12. Oh, man, American rednecks would be so goddamn good at anti-drone warfare.

  13. They should blow duck whistles as they hunt orcs for the troll factor or have it blasting from the UA drones.
