Parkrun: Outdoor mass group exercise ban ‘not justified’

  1. I spotted this before when I checked the FB page for my local run. It’s all very strange here in wales; it’s fine to queue 100s deep for the next sale but not to do a park run.

It’s safe to take your kids to a grotty indoor soft play centre, but not to an organised outdoor winter wonderland.

It’s ok to cram 150 into a pub to watch a rugby game on tv, but not to put the same 150 into the larger open air stadium next door.

Feels like it’s all optics to be honest. Let’s look like we’re doing ‘something’

  2. One of many instances of politicians not being able to see the wood for the trees when it comes to public health during the pandemic.

  3. The Welsh government have legit gone insane over this. Like when they blocked off certain aisles in supermarkets.

  4. The benefits if doing the park run outweigh the risks of catching COVID while participating in it. We already have a huge obesity problem and this is one reason why we have been hit badly by COVID, our population is simply not fit enough to fight the virus as well as it could. Stopping people from exercising is not going to have the beneficial effects the government thinks it will.

  5. Yeah this is ridiculous, though it’s an accidental consequence of the rules rather than intentional.

Nothing outdoors should be banned. There’s very little risk in any outdoor activity. That includes watching sport in stadiums, if there are safe ways to get in and out of the stands without being in a crush.

  6. It’s not a damn exercise ban. It’s a ban on mass gatherings. You can still exercise on your own. You could still go to the same park and do the exact same run.

  7. Covid risk is higher in obese people, but another way of looking at it is those with “people who can’t sustain a raised heart rate for a period of time because their cardio is crap” is at risk.

Therefore Parkrun is the ultimate covid fighting strategy for individuals.
