Targeting ships may seem superfluous to the main objective of pushing across to the left bank, however in order to establish a safe crossing for equipment and supplies (and personnel), Ukraine needs air superiority in order to push Russian artillery far enough back that a couple of bridges / pontoon bridges would be secure.
Hitting these Russian missile capable ships now – as well as the many air defense systems – is shaping the battle field to come. The battle field of spring / summer when Ukraine has received enough F-16s.
Don’t feel disheartened by the lack of territorial gains for now. The way the Ukrainian Command is working is going to pay off later.
And when Russia seem hell bent on throwing away their armored vehicles in unliving runs, time works for Ukraine.
