Up to 99 million animals ‘needlessly slaughtered without stunning’ every year

  1. Absolutely abhorrent and that includes pre-stunned Halal/Kosher slaughter ….but, I can reluctantly accept that there is a need for it.

That being said, the refusal of Halal Certification authorities to allow the labelling of stunned/non-stunned Halal meat should be illegal. It’s a deliberate ploy to remove choice and force non-stun through the back door.

  2. Killing an animal so that it feels pain, for religious reasons is barbarism.

If you eat meat- make sure the animal was killed humanely. Any other excuse is BS.

  3. Vegan food is intrinsically inclusive. Regardless of your culture or beliefs it is open to you and you will no longer be complicit in animal abuse justified only by what you think tastes good.

  4. Not saying I agree with it, but what do people think we did before electricity? Smothered them gently with a pink fluffy pillow?

  5. It’s easy to have strong opinions on things we don’t understand.

Have you researched whether stunning is more humane or have you just watched videos/read opinion pieces? Have any of you ever killed something you’ve eaten?

Aside from the obvious ignorance that comes up in such discussions, a nuance people need to be aware of is that halal regulations for slaughter are stricter than you know. They’re compromised due to volume of consumption and economic factors. Some people are just waiting in the wings to make their usual ‘ancient book’/’sky daddy’ comments- you’re not helpful.

  6. Can also be read as 99 million sentient beings murdered last year is just the tip of the iceberg.

I get where we’re coming from, but if you want to know why we’ve not met an alien species yet, I imagine this would be item 1 on their list.

  7. Said this the other day –

Still don’t understand why anyone who cares about this isn’t a vegan.

No one asked the obvious question. Hence why this still happens…

  8. I hate the slow influx of halal meat into lots of restaurants. We have laws on humane practice for a reason and because of some stupid magic book they’re ok to ignore

  9. A lot of the time stunning also fails and cows are hung upside down whilst still conscious and having their throats slit.

Chickens can still be conscious when their throats are cut after the electric stunning is not totally effective. Some can even be alive when dunked into boiling water.

Pigs thrash about in gas chambers as they suffocate, all ‘rspca approved’.

There is a way to end this madness. Choose to be vegan. I used to eat meat multiple times a day and now consume fake meat instead. Nobody dies and my taste buds are still satisfied. Even if it tasted bad, that is not enough to justify the suffering and death of a sentient creature.

  10. ITT people singling out a method of slaughter for cruelty without realising that the way their meat is slaughtered is also cruel… love the double standards! 🙄

  11. Absolutely insane that anyone thinks asphyxiation with CO2 is humane. CO2 at appreciable densities triggers sensations of drowning and intense fear/panic, and is the basis for waterboarding which is a form of torture.

  12. Slaughtering the animal has been cruel for as long as humans have existed. Although I agree some methods are seemingly more painful and stressful for the animals, some have been common practice for thousands of years. I disagree with any form of religion dictating how an animal should be killed because let’s face it, it’s just bs. Going vegan is your own choice and if that makes the world a better place for you then go ahead, but for better part, buying local produce from your butchers and supporting the farms nearby would be a lot better than funding these crap places that kill them in a much harsher way. However, there is no such thing as a cruelty-free death in a world where demand for food is increasing as we both increase our population and the amount we consume. It will only get more chaotic from here.

  13. Are male calves and chicks not destined for the meat industry stunned before slaughter?

What about the suffering in the previous weeks or months? Can we focus more on that rather than arguing over the last few minutes?

Death is never fun, if we choose to eat meat, it has to die, and there is no truly nice way to die.

  14. You know that “my religion says I cant do this vs my religion says you cant do this” meme. Seems like it should apply to the animals. I don’t think the cow believes in god or heaven.

  15. With every news article reporting inhumane slaughter, abuse, atrocious conditions, disease outbreaks, the negative health impacts of consuming meat, and not to mention the ever growing environmental impacts of actually rearing and killing these animals, I don’t understand how anyone can still think eating meat is in any way worthwhile or ethical.

    Not preaching, just a thought.

  16. Can someone clarify about non-stun and halal slaughter, is halal meat automatically from non-stun slaughter? I feel like I’ve previously read that most halal meat in the UK is actually from animals stunned before slaughter, and that people just automatically assume halal meat to be non-stun when it’s not necessarily the case. I may have things totally wrong so would appreciate some more info.

  17. But honestly – does anyone buying meat really care. Has anyone here who does eat meat not buy something if they’re not entirely sure of where it’s come from .
