Here is Rath Mor (the great fort), and the royal seat of the kings of Dál nAraide just outside Antrim. Personally have no idea how planning permission was giving to the house beside it. Think it is really disrespectful. What are your thoughts?

  1. Houses were here before historical monuments. It’s a disgrace Stephen, so it is.

  2. Wait until you try to go see Springfarm Rath, also in Antrim. It’s like an English village green.

E: The fence of some houses literally flattens the side of the ring.

  3. You should check out the ancient graveyard along the vow road, ballymoney.

  4. Any protections of these sites depends on the Scheduling. Supposedly is scheduled a 10-20mtr buffer is needed. Like most legislations, only as good as the policing of them and can only apply from point of protection onwards. So if the dwellings are already there then that’s it…

Historic Environment Division (HED) are the governing dept on this in NI.

On another note for sake of balance or even playing devils advocate! – Raths are simply a mildly fortified farmstead of their time and thus a home/dwelling. How does it differ having another dwelling on or by them? Also there 1000s of them accross the province? 😜

  5. Reminds me of something in America, there was once a Native American civilisation known as the Adena today, they built a massive number of mounds, many of them what we’d call barrows here. Only the largest is left, the rest were destroyed by colonist farmers, and the great mount is next door to a private prison.

  6. I spent a lot of time around this house 20yrs ago, it was never as open as that at the back of the house before! I’m shocked how many more buildings are on this site, it used to be main house, cottage and tennis courts out the front!

  7. Go south and there are lots of houses, garages and shes built into the walls of castles . Saw one house in Kanturk that had a tower castles as a kids playhouse. Lucky kids!

  8. So they built their house too close to trees and possibly a mound where people have lived before? What should we do Kevin? Just not exist because someone existed before us?
