  1. Most people here in Germany call it “Worchester Sauce” or, even worse, “Worsterchester Sauce”.
I have to admit I joined the circle of enlightened people who know it’s “Wooster Sauce” only a few years ago…

  2. Apparently, this pronunciation is a throwback to the days where the English peasants naturally progressed to more easily pronounced names and it sticked, which is why it bears no resemblance to the spelling.

  3. Hearing the French try to pronounce it is hilarious.

Also, glad my many months of German on Duolingo is paying off.

  4. That’s your problem it’s the wrong sauce. Worcestershire sauce, not just Worcester sauce, is the more entertaining one to get people to say

  5. “Worcester” sauce doesn’t exist.

    It’s “Worcestershire”. Wuss-tuh-sheer.

  6. I pronounce it washyersister. Everyone knows what I mean.

  7. Worcestershire sauce is used so much in Japanese cooking that some people think it’s native to the country, and have a bit of a brain fart/duh moment when you point out that /u:su̥ta:/ doesn’t sound anything like a Japanese word. (Never mind the fact that it doesn’t sound much like the English word)

Like German, they would call it Worcester sauce rather than Worcestershire sauce, but they also just call it “sauce”, to the point where if you are offered “sauce” on something you assume it’s Worcestershire sauce (or at least, something based on it that’s a bit thicker).

Anyway in German orthography, Wuuster isn’t bad. I’d have gone for Wuster though.
