Propaganda from domestic terrorist magas posing as news organizations are an even greater threat.
Something about broken clocks…
But what if we lose our access?!?! Waaaahhh
That’s funny, because I feel like news media (across the political spectrum) aren’t cautious enough with their statements.
Aww…The poor MSM. Years of blindly pushing the government’s narrative finally put them in a difficult position where they can’t hide the facts but are too afraid to commit to reporting on them objectively for fear of blowback.
They’re not timid, they’re complicit.
Not fact checking Tik Tok is the threat to our democracy. Tik Tok is the new real time fake news outlet to supercede Twitter. It’s also Chinese, so fake propaganda aligned with China, Russia, and Iran can be pumped out and ignorant people are gonna outrage over it. Check and see if they’re siding with Hamas to spin a narrative against Israel, all to divide Americans. Shit needs to stop. Ban Tik Tok.
They are the frogs in the pot. They know it’s happening but won’t do anything about it.
This article will fall on deaf ears. The media courted Trump because it got them clicks, and they’ll do it again. But….it hardly matters, so few journalists even research or report news these days.
Unbiased sources are available… I’d recommend against ones found liable for 785 million dollars for election lies.
“Media Isn’t Using as Many Sensationalistic Headlines as We Want”
With media from the activities of over 7 billion people available at an instant’s notice, the human brain isn’t capable of empathizing with everything all at once. The world has always been on fire and it took care of itself without my knowledge; why do I have to be outraged about every news event when it’s all out of my control? I don’t even know what I’m feeding my kids tomorrow, I’ll work on that instead.
The only thing that matches the timidity of the media in confronting these issues is the timidity of Democrats. The same bug that seems to have bitten all these media newsrooms has also struck the very leaders that are supposed to represent the opposition to this fascist tide. They’re just as guilty of trying to restore a sense of normalcy by pretending we’re back to business as usual and other political virtue signaling as if compromise and bi-partisanship are still inherently good even when dealing with an anti-democratic party that operates in complete bad faith.
It’s two sides of the same coin really. If even the opposition party can’t or won’t react aggressively on these issues, what good is a more aggressive media? Where are those heeding the warnings of an appropriately dire newspaper headline supposed to turn? To Joe Biden who fully supports Bibi Netanyahu and his campaign of terror in Gaza? To the Democrats in the senate who value the filibuster and whatever the hell Tommy Tuberville is doing over a functioning government capable of enacting the will of the people?
Right now there’s really only two political options on the table for voters: outright authoritarianism with the Republican party or the hope that we can will ourselves back to some pre-2016 “normal” if just get some more normal-acting Democrats in office. Our media is a reflection of that political reality, which is at its core, a broken system.
This headline sounds a lot like Trump saying the media is an enemy. Seems like pretty similar rhetoric.
I guess it’s a bit ironic everyone thinks the media loves Trump when Trump despises it and constantly blames the media, too, for his own scandals. He seems to feel pressured by it at least.
I’m not really comfortable with the constant push for a biased media which slants entirely to Democrats or to the left. The article seems to want the media to take a clear side against Israel in the war and be even more intense in crying out about the coming end of democracy. But sources have been warning about Trump and the GOP for years now, all to deaf ears, and the media isn’t here to push your preferred side in the war.
Anyone who reads the NYT or WaPo is already voting Dem, so their readers don’t need to hear “the GOP is very bad” over and over. That’s dull, unhelpful news which just gets old and isn’t informative. I wouldn’t subscribe to the papers if that’s all they said. Overly embellished language just turns people off, especially if it’s repeated constantly, as do persistent doom and gloom stories. Sometimes we just want the facts in simple, dry language so we can interpret people like Johnson ourselves.
Also the article says we’re at war, “literally and figuratively,” but we’re not at war literally.
>The Onion’s take — “The Onion Stands With Israel Because It Seems Like You Get In Less Trouble That Way” — felt more honest and heartful than many serious-news headlines.
I don’t even know what to trust in the media anymore. There are a lot of insidious players, many of which are whitelisted here. MSNBC seems pretty honest until you realize that their Comcast board doesn’t want a Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren anywhere near the White House and will give airtime to anyone who will denigrate them. They even gave Jonathan *”I lied about Bernie Sanders’ 1960’s photo and never apologized”* Capehart a show.
Timid? An ENABLING of fascism US media has been THE threat to US Democracy:
Who let them off the hook? The media is wholly responsible for what the average person consumes as information, and their dishonesty and favoritism led us to this point- gone is impartiality, I miss the Cronkites and Rathers of the industry (sure Dan obviously didn’t like W in 04, but that aside).
The news media needs to ask strong and direct questions in mass. Very few actually do ask these questions. How far can you go as a journalist with losing access? I have a feeling access means everything.
How is the world on fire?
If I had a dollar every time a news article claimed someone was a “threat to US democracy” I’d be able to retire and I’m only college
“Also, here’s how to use an ad blocker to get their content for free.”
And the timid cowards are the best of the bunch. Many are fully complicit or only care about how much money they can make while the county falls apart
corporate media failed during iraq war
this time is not different
The media being in the hands of a few billionaires is a much bigger threat to democracy.
If media is being timid that is because that has a purpose.
We should have higher (legal) standards for media, especially news.
Right now most news is just propaganda and most of it shouldn’t be allowed to call itself news.
They should understand that if democracy goes so do they. They should be fighting for their lives.
