In Barca’s 1-0 over Real Sociedad there’s been a lot of talk about Koundé’s challenge on Oyarzabal (66’) where many are saying this should have been called a penalty. Would like to know your perspective and thoughts on the challenge.

Personally, I think the right call was made. For three reasons:

1. Oyarzabal has no one to play his potential touch/pass to and neither would his touch have continued play on for himself.

2. Oyarzabal does not play the ball. His leg moves laterally and slightly back to catch Koundé’s leg, were he to be actually playing the ball his foot/leg would be extended towards the ball not across both the defenders leg and the ball.

3. Once Koundé extends his arm and squares off Oyarzabal it’s a contested ball, or more so in transition of possession, no longer in the attacker’s advantage and instead advantage is in the defender’s and Oyarzabal’s left foot is in turn obstructing Koundé.

Obviously we hold bias as Barca fans here, and the script could easily be flipped against us in any game. Look at Pepulu’s penalty v. Granada. Could’ve gone either way v. La Real simply due to La Liga’s poor standard of refereeing, not some corrupt call in favor of us, it was the right decision.

  1. He was being overtaken fair and square. No reckless endangerment or brazen harming. No foul.

  2. Penalty. We can’t even argue this. Had this been on us this forum would be flipping.
