*”services should be provided at a level that means that they are no less effective than if a strike were not taking place”*

Nice of them to admit that all of these services are already running at 40% efficiency.
In other words they’re preventing strikes from being bad enough that there’s be sufficient pressure on them to appease those who are striking.
One step short of just banning strikes altogether.
I sort of lost any sympathy when I missed a loved one dying due to the strikes.
Awesome, that means 20% more trains running during strikes!
Cause people always do their best work under duress.
So the government wants more disruptive and impactful strike action that isn’t necessarily legal this is how you are going to get it.
if you make effective strike action impossible and refuse to pay workers a market rate, you’ll have staff retention issues and services will collapse anyway. More excellent long term thinking from the Tories.
Unless that’s what you want to happen 🤷
Imagine Clapham junction or east Croydon, with 40% trains and 100% passengers. Gonna be fun.
They could ensure 100% of trains run by, you know, paying them a fair fucking wage in line with inflation.
Or by actually addressing inflation instead of leaving it to Labour to fix after an inevitable GE loss, at which point they will blame Labour for inflation.
For this purpose the govt have decided to hire ghosts and spirits in the unlikely event of strikes.
If you’re going to legislate strikes out of effective existence, why not just change the figure to 100%?
So what’s the plan, slave labour? Start arresting people for not going to work?
Why not make it 99.9% while they were at it? It’s not like they are going to win anything in this decade
This is an awful attack on workers’ rights to strike and should be staunchly resisted.
Wow so just completely undermine any union’s efficacy to achieve change – just what they’re pushing on doctors.
What a lovely government.
Drivers don’t need more money they are paid enough already, I’d rather the lower paid workers got an increase , the cleaners , ticket office staff yes , drivers – sorry , no .
How about a law that ensures that trains run on bloody time
Versus the planned cancelling of services by Avanti and Transpennine when there is no strikes.
I imagine that this will lead to these running at 4% permanently as all the people with half a brain will get another job. All that’s left is the old guys who retire in 6 months and the kids too dumb to know better.
so the government wants this? well. maybe we should keep all the trains running, but for free, so no money is being brought in, but the trains are still running which is what the government wants
Pay the staff, nationalize,.and fuck rishy and all the other fishy Tory cunts.
Fuck the tories honestly. These cunts are traitors to the nation they supposedly represent. They should all be in jail and the party quashed. Steal from the poor and give to the rich absolute scumbags.
You will see staff engaging in toilet strikes. Driver stops in station radios ahead saying he needs a poo. this causes all the other trains on that line to get held at red signals while he does his business. Then driver gets in and drives his/her route. The train behind does the same thing causing all the other trains to be held at a red signal while they do their business , Then the driver behind does the same thing and the same thing the driver behind them.
Eventually you have a tonne of delay minutes , through staff taking personal relief breaks and this sort of industrial action can go on for a long time.
Also you would start getting staff to work to rule in other areas, refusing to take a train out because of defects for example, following the fault finding /rule book to the letter instead of doing what works and solved the problem before.
Toilet strikes have been done on London Underground before track maintenance workers used them to get concessions.
The things they are pulling lately, banning tents, stopping strikes, impingements on freedom of speech, arresting protestors etc, it’s dystopian and heading towards a dictatorship.
Again the general public will accept this as they have all the other trade union and industrial action reforms which out greater and greater onus on unions to prove it’s what people really want.
This is the government stripping away union rights bit by bit
Only but fair to make sure a basic service is run when workers go on strike.
This is just complete bullshit
It mostly makes sense that the army and police can’t strike
It kinda makes sense that ambulances, doctors/nurses and the fire service can’t strike or must provide a minimum level of service (exclusively for the preservation of life, and limited to that requirement)
But trains? What’s the justification for legally requiring people to run some fucking trains?
This is disgusting, we’re a supposedly free country… it certainly doesn’t look like it today
The rail workers remind us of what’s possible if we were all able to band together and demand fair wages. I support them 100% at all times!!!
Avanti is only planning to run 66% of trains on Saturdays in December between London and Manchester. That’s before any cancellations because of staff shortages, signal failures or vehicles hitting a railway bridge at Watford. And the action the Government has taken about this? They have renewed Avanti’s franchise.
There is an emergency brake in the union laws that allows the government to give notice they will stop recognising a given union, bypass them and just force terms on the employers. Another disrupted Christmas due to rail union selfishness and I for one would be totally happy for them to use it. This has gone on long enough and would be a good way for this zombie government to flex muscle.
I read a rumour on BBC HYS that the RMT are going to strike every Friday (and probably Saturday) in December. Frankly that is very plausible and, if true, that’s a public goodwill bonfire.
If Mick Lynch is going to fuck around by bragging about how he unilaterally doesn’t let his members vote on stuff he personally disagrees with, he can find out. For starters, that practice should be illegal. Very simple change in the law and Labour would probably support it.
He has spent so long saying “They’re limiting your right to strike” while pumping the bellows to ensure that happens. He’s also a Brexiteer who now moans about the government using its Brexit freedoms.
Suprised we haven’t autonomised trains yet, flights and ships are practically autopilot. Train systems by nature are far less complex than those other two methods of transport and can be easily fully automated (relatively). I say we start with the tube.
I can’t for the life of me figure out why the country is in such a shit state, unbelievably naive short term Tory thinking. These clowns are destroying the country with their incompetence.
Coming from someone who used to work for a ToC several years back. I really don’t understand why *any* business would want to take on such a service contract when:
* The government sets Anytime and season ticket prices. Other ticket prices are the ones that ToCs have more control over.
* Passengers can claim compensation for delays, leading to tonnes of additional admin work needed to process such claims.
* Network Rail charge you a tonne for fixed track access charges.
* The Department for Transport can fine you for failure to hit targets.
* You are at the mercy of unions like the RMT and ASLEF; the latter of which have the power to completely cripple your network through industrial action, because it turns out drivers are absolutely essential.
* Damage control is 100% necessary, especially when bad customer experiences risk being escalated to the press or to a Member of Parliament.
* You become the bogeyman for a crappy public/private partnership system being run on an outdated network that no government wants to invest money to upgrade.

Therefore making strikes pointless.
This government is scum.
