  1. If I was him I would just hold them, he will win anyway and it removes the potential for a dictator label if this drags on too long.

  2. It’s wartime, and Russia would see polling stations as legitimate military targets, right next to hospitals and daycares.

  3. If he is elected without holding election in occupied part of ukraine, it would be like a acknowledgment of the lost of these territories, and weaken his legitimacy there too.

  4. Makes sense. People gathering in election centers is a terrible idea. Money that is needed elsewhere will be spent. It will be difficult to make proper election campaigns. The elections will take the attention that is needed for the victory. Many people are at the frontline. Many people have left the country. There’s constant shelling in certain places. And the list goes on.

  5. [Just a heads-up that the owner of The Hill, John Finklestein, is a close associate of Trump and Gulliani and was a major part of the effort to extort Ukraine for false allegations against Biden during the 2020 election.](https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/18/media/jimmy-finkelstein-the-hill-ukraine/index.html) Zelensky has repeatedly made inqueries into potential avenues of holding an election during wartime (which the Ukrainian constitution forbids) and whatever statements the Hill is claiming he made have doubtless been utterly estranged from their context to support Finklestein’s agenda.

  6. I know someone will inevitably mention the 1944 US election, but that war wasn’t happening on our soil.

  7. Yeah, the main problem as well is that there wont be “Just” election race and program.

We already can see people start the blame game , criticism and our lovely corruption accusations.

Make a coherent victory plan ? Explain steps we need to take ? How you propose to take them ?

Fuck that lets rally against current goverment!

  8. It sounds anti-democratic, but Russia has a mastery of fucking with elections, and I wouldn’t do it either.

Democracy is based on an informed populace, and that sounds more ridiculous every year.

  9. It’s literally against Ukraines constitution to have election during wartime.

  10. No way. How would an election even be possible under an invasion?

  11. There’s a catch that some of the possible candidates would probably capitalise on certain sensitive matters by suggesting “easy solutions” such as relaxing the martial law, winding down the warfare, greatly limiting the draft, opening the borders or welcoming back all those who escaped the country illegally.

Plenty of people are scared shitless for their lives and would gladly cast the votes for anyone who seems to be pushing that agenda.

  12. The Ukrainians have and will continue to vote with their feet.

  13. The outcome of an election held under these circumstances would not be legitimate.

Too many people displaced, missing or under occupation. Too dangerous to run polls in some places, while the threat of Russian attack would suppress turnout in others.

No result would be fair or representative. All it would do is provide the Russians with an opportunity to kill civilians and sow discord.

  14. Seems kind difficult to hold an election when a 1/4 of your country is under occupation and the rest of the country is under genuine threat of shelling and missile attacks. 100% guarantee that if they had an election the voting locations would be a target.

This isn’t really equivalent to anything the US experienced. Civil War and war of 1812 don’t really compare here. South was in secession and thus considered themselves a different country and war of 1812 never had the British occupying any significant portion of US land for long enough to actually prevent an election

  15. as much as some people might decry miscarriage of democracy, Zelensky is right, not that he wouldn’t win with a massive landslide should he go ahead, but the risk of handing over the country to 5th columnist or the corrupt system the occupied zones are under, if there were even the slightest chance of a change in outcome brought about by interference then referendums need to be postponed

  16. I concur, though they should also timebox that if this is going to be ongoing, when is the right time.

  17. Can you imagine the level of Russian interference in that election

  18. This “news” outlet is not to be trusted. The hill is a sham. Like common dreams etc.

  19. So Russia, which has a history of interfering in other country’s elections, can interfere.

  20. everyone in ukraine knows who to vote for, all an election enables is russia throwing as much money as possible at it to spread chaos, misinformation and corruption. There is a reason during wartime that democracies have an emergency government state to streamline the country for war and contain and limit chaos in order to protect the country and it’s people.

  21. Has everyone forgotten that there’s a fucking war going on?

  22. They’re being invaded. Seems like a reasonable responsr

  23. Hearing that it’s actually in the Ukraine constitution not to have elections during war time makes sense to me when i otherwise would have mentioned Ukraine isn’t exactly a corruption free state.
