I know that in [Japan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2W7UocH0Hs) it’s normal for people there to leave valuables unattended as they don’t have the tendency to steal, staff at a cafe including other public spaces or cleaners will mainly bring it to the lost and found until the owner retrieves it.

Even if you just left your cellphone on one of the tables inside a Starbucks in Japan for example, no one there will steal it (since there is a higher amount of public trust in the country, people do not want to stand out for their actions), despite you just heading to the counter and ordering your food or beverage or heading to the restroom.

In hindsight can the same be done in Norway at public spaces such as cafes, food courts including other public areas even though you’re just heading to the counter or restroom or is it too much of a risk to do so?

  1. My laptop has been sitting in an unlocked office in a public building for over a year.
