And what about Ukraine then? Is Europe simply gonna leave it in Russia’s claws?
This is an opinion piece?
> But aside from that, nothing would stand in the way of Cyprus’ membership in NATO. The island is contested between the Greek-speaking south (which is in the EU) and the ethnically Turkish north (which is recognized only by Turkey). But both Greece and Turkey are already in NATO. Cypriot membership in the alliance could actually stabilize the island’s simmering conflict.
What? Is the author so ignorant to not know that Turkey would veto it? Is there even a Russian invasion threat on Cyprus (except the oligarchs they sell citizenship, of course)?
Another option Finland has is to join the French-led and apparently German-backed initiative that is due to come later this semester towards the establishment of an EU army. Maybe this force will itself end up being a member of NATO, meaning Finland would not be in it directly, but through a multinational force that is.
Does anyone in Russia want to fix their own screwed up country, get rid of the ex-KGB kleptocracy in the Kremlin, and leave their poor neighbors alone?
ANYbody?
Also NATO: Why does Russia behave this way? They have nothing to fear?
Not sure whether Austria could just join NATO without a Russian go-ahead. It would be technically possible to renounce neutrality without cancelling the Staatsvertrag I guess but it would reek of bad faith.
And:
>But aside from that, nothing would stand in the way of Cyprus’ membership in NATO.
haha, wishful thinking.
well, they already did it in 2014, and the invasion and occupation still in process.
