Yeah EE is dying, the economic growth is temporary at best.
Romania will have it’s census in the spring and summer (assuming that will not be delayed again by COVID). A 11% drop will be small potatoes.
More Bulgaria for me.
Romania, Latvia and Lithuania have the same trend – not sure about Slovakia.
It’s to be expected, when you consistently don’t improve your people’s life and they have an easy way to go somewhere else, make more money and build a more comfortable life, they’re gonna do it.
That’s unexpected. Not the drop but the intensity. Eurostat published [population projections](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/population-demography/population-projections/database) as recently as 2019 and they expected Bulgaria to hit this level only after 2025. This is too huge to be due to COVID only, are people leaving the country faster than expected?
With such a rapid population decline I wonder how Bulgarians could fix it long-term? Eventually it’ll be a grave threat to economic growth and democracy.

I’d argue that this is actually positive for Bulgaria. There’s a sense of urgency now and a feeling of renewed need of innovation because of the problems we face. Also many people left because they felt trapped. We don’t want people to feel trapped and we want to have people who genuinely want to stay.

This is horrible horrible news, but unfortunately many people don’t seem to see it this way. This population collapse could threaten our nations existence in the next 50-80 years. Overall the western world’s birthrates are slowing down way too much, this will soon become our world’s number problem.
Did it decrease more severely than the population forecast? Oh my god.
Should be a tax in the EU countries that took their immigrants and then that goes to Bulgaria for programs so less people leave.
Bulgaria raised them and educated them to be their future, immigration will destroy their country because as the educated leave the country becomes worse
This is shocking, iirc the prediction for 2021 was a reduction but a lesser one. This is huge! I dont want to think what will come out from our census as well, we had similar projections (relatively).
And a huge issue all Balkans face is that most educated youngsters leave for Western Europe (and thrive there actually) after finishing college so no new ideas, no new inovations here.
So eventually Ireland will have more people than Bulgaria and Netherlands will have more people than Romania. Imagine one day Luxembourg will have more population than one of the Baltic 3.
Bulgaria needs to invite Amishs to settle in the depopulated villages.
It’s not that shocking. This is what the EU is all about. They knew what they signed up for.
