  1. >The UK Government will bring forward legislation to ensure new oil and gas licenses are awarded annually, the King’s Speech has confirmed.

    >The government will also aim to improve grid connections across the UK and attract investment in renewables.

    >The speech also included a pledge to support other countries transition away from fossil fuels.

    >In his first King’s Speech, King Charles said: “Legislation will be introduced to strengthen the United Kingdom’s energy security and reduce reliance on volatile international energy markets and hostile foreign regimes.

    >“This bill will support the future licensing of new oil and gas fields, helping the country to transition to net zero by 2050 without adding undue burdens on households.”

    >The announcement confirms reports trailed earlier this week, with the government saying the UK will continue to need oil and gas to meet energy requirements in the years to come.

Most of what is extracted from the North Sea is exported, it doesn’t go to British energy suppliers, and despite our own oil supply, we don’t have a reduction in energy bills. So this justification doesn’t make any sense to me.

    >>And perhaps more importantly, we export much of what we extract from UK land and waters — around 80 per cent for oil .

    >>The private companies that own the fields are under no obligation to sell the oil and gas to UK energy suppliers. So even if we extract more fossil fuels in the UK, there’s no reason to think it would end up being used in British homes and on British roads at a price that’s any lower than the amount companies pay on global commodities markets — it’s a free market where the fossil fuels go to the highest bidder.

    >>To create a direct link, the government would likely need to introduce trade tariffs or other measures to make it more attractive for the companies to sell oil and gas produced here to UK companies. But the government has never said this is part of its plan.
