• The AMPTP has been trying to get SAG-AFTRA on board with the idea of studios paying actors for their likenesses since the strike began earlier this year.
• This most recent proposal would allow studios to use digital scans of dead actors without the consent of their estates or the guild.
• SAG-AFTRA has refused and expressed its desire for changes that would require the studios to pay actors each time their faces are used and receive consent from those actors before doing so.
Can’t SAG just make AI mock up of the studio executives to say that they won’t use AI?
The studios aren’t arguing in good faith if that’s what they want to do with likeness. Especially being able to use a dead actor’s likeness without permission of the estate. No one is going to take that.
AI likeness someday soon either forces human actors into scrambling for venue and work around a sea of 24-per year Tom Cruise^a movies, or the studios into dinosaurs wondering how they got dismissed like cable TV.
I hope it’s the latter, but I don’t think even:
> SAG-AFTRA has refused and expressed its desire for changes that would require the studios to pay actors each time their faces are used and receive consent from those actors before doing so.
would prevent the former except for getting the most popular actors paid more often. I hope it’s not the case.
I’m off to research a bit more though because I’m not up on the recent news regarding and reading some tech subreddits leaves one with a bad taste about AI and art and therefore ranty.
My god, this would be such a shitshow. Imagine if they had AI actors and AI extras starring in a movie written and directed by AI. You’d get a seven-part movie franchise about Nicholas Cage, Ron Perlman, and Cher all trying to find eggs at the same supermarket. Like, AI doesn’t know what a good movie looks like. It doesn’t know what good acting is. It doesn’t know what a good script looks like. But it can go from script idea to finished movie in a day’s turnaround because it doesn’t have to film anything.
If SAG-AFTRA can’t negotiate them out of that position, movies will just become the next iteration of “feed the AI a prompt and watch what happens!”
Why can’t we use AI to automate work no one wants to do and save the actual creative stuff for the real life people that enjoy doing it?
I’m what universe would actors be ok with this shit. This is ghoulish even by studio standards.
Front line fighters, power to them! This issue is bigger than just the film industry, if we’re being serious.
This strike is going to last basically until the summer of 2024. No question.

Well duh. That was always a non-starter idea.
