I’m getting end of the post WW2 world order vibes right now.
From the article:
“NATO announced the formal suspension of a key Cold War-era security treaty in response to Russia’s pullout from the deal just hours earlier. The alliance also said its members who signed the treaty are now freezing their participation in the pact.
Most of NATO’s 31 allies have signed the Treaty of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which was aimed at preventing Cold War rivals from massing forces at or near mutual borders. It was signed in November 1990.
NATO said this action was required because “a situation whereby Allied State Parties abide by the Treaty, while Russia does not, would be unsustainable.”
Lets goooo
Ooooh, you mean we can finally start massing armies on the Russian border and do large-scale military exercises by the border?
TIL
Honestly I am a bit surprised it was still in effect after all that has happened in Ukraine
Putin really must believe he is still in 1952 when Soviet armies could outnumber NATO. Nowadays Russia’s industrial capacity is pathetic and NATO’s population is 5x that of Russia’s. This has to be some sort of psy ops move.
Our troops are merely passing by
It’s a special suspension operation
I don’t understand Russia pulling out of these treaties. Like the one that limited land based cruise missiles only puts Moscow in a tactically less secure position, or this one which means there’s no reason nato cannot station armies near Russia. If this was 1980 when nato feared waves or Russian soldiers I could see a reason but now espically after what Ukraine has shown I’d expect Russia to want to keep larger superior forces for from its borders.
russia already withdrew from the treaty, there is no point in the West limiting themselves if russia will not do the same.
This is what russia always does. They never uphold anything they sign/promise, so any treaty with them only limits one side.
Its reckless, harmful and a complete waste of time to make any sort of deals with them.
Russia keeps pretending like it’s the Soviet Union.
It can no longer match NATO so the treaty itself was good for Russian interests but sure, pretend you’re going to build tens of thousand of tanks and 3,000 black fighter jets.
Russians never engage in good faith for anything. They’re a terrorist state.
Damn. Maybe all those preppers were on to something.
Give them what they need to take out the Kerch/Crimean bridge already or lets do it ourselves.
Boy, it would be a shame if Norway, Sweden, and Finland put a huge joint base up north within striking distance of Russians northern fleet headquarters that the Russians would have to counter with all $7 they have for their budget this year.
