Imo the UK has a huge growing issue of alcoholism. We talk about smoking and the damage/cost to the NHS but alcoholism is more socially acceptable and even encouraged. Look at how much its pushed in supermarkets and prices lowered (in supermarkets).
Its also symptomatic of the state of the country and how peoples mental health is.
What i took away from those graphs is that Latvians lie about how much they drink
If I was expected to both work for (a lot) less than the value of my labour – increasingly so because of my gender – and then was expected to do all the childcare and family organizing or emotional labour as well, I’m pretty sure I’d drink a shitload more than this.
Add to that all the misogyny, the violence, the casual disregard – I’m surprised they’re not all junkies, and not surprised at all that they aren’t very happy.
Is it any wonder when the country is crumbling? I used to work in a pub, I’ve seen how bad things can get and it’s a LOT worse when you throw long hours for shit pay into the mix.
Yes it’s the alcohol. Not the draining work culture or the load of domestic duties and child care that inadvertently fall on women. It’s DEFINITELY the alcohol. I think the booze is the symptom and not the cause.
It couldn’t be that people need/want a small escape from their shit lives…
This article starts by saying “6 drinks” is a binge but later on defines that more clearly as 60mg of ethanol: that’s actually 6 units, 2.5 pints of Stella is 6.5 units, 3 ‘average’ glasses of wine is 6.9 units. The definition of binge here is about half of what the article might initially make you think.
And I suspect this was a self reported survey where the British respondents were more honest than some other countries. The article handily shares a graph of alcohol consumption per capita; a lot of the countries who are supposedly behind us on binge drinking consume more alcohol. Lithuania is claiming to have half the binge drinking rate of us when they drink 20% more alcohol – lads, we know you’re lying.
I’m a drinker, but I’ve always felt deals on alcohol should be banned. It should cost the same (per millilitre) to buy a half-bottle of wine as it does a full bottle or 20 bottles. And 2-for-1 or buy six for 25% off etc. should also be banned.
All too often I’ve been at Waitrose with enough wine for the weekend and the cashier says “Buy two more and you get 25% off”. I’m strong enough to say no, but it’s like having a drug dealer push it onto you.
And in the case of Waitrose, it’s clear to see that the prices rise when their 25% offer is on, so you’re actually being punished for buying less than six.
Shops should also only be able to adjust the price of a particular wine/beer/spirit once a month or something.
