  1. Think of how many moms for Liberty moms, proud boys and other far right culture war soldiers from VA would be having a conniption fit right now if they didn’t wait to get their political headlines from the Facebook memes on their social media feeds?

  2. Holy shit. Kentucky re-elected their dem governor, Ohio passed both abortion and legal weed, and now Virginia elected a trans representative?

I know a lot more elections need to be reported on but tonight looks like a good night for democracy.

  3. I want this to be true so bad but waiting for others to call it. Only the Hill has called this one so far.

Edit: NYT and WP just called it!

  4. >“You attack trans kids in my district at your own political peril,” Roem told The Hill in a recent interview.

No idea who she was before now, but I’d go to war for her off this comment alone

  5. Amazing. What a night. You love to see it. My cold, dark heart is exploding. This is beautiful.

  6. Title is technically correct but misleading. She’s been in the VA legislature for 3 terms already, just moving from the house to the Senate.

  7. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️

You love to see it! Next up, Sarah McBride is going to be the first trans person in the US House of Representatives! Us trans folks aren’t going anywhere!

  8. Alternate headline : former thrash metal singer wins state senate seat !!!

Not downplaying her struggles or challenges. As a metal head, I’m just rejoicing for different reasons.

  9. What a great night.

Election Day on an off-year under a Democrat president. I’m beginning to think red waves are a fable.

  10. No offense but I dont really associate with rainbow people but this makes me feel hopeful that maybe some day a bunch of yuppies no longer control the US

  11. I met her once on my way into vote for her a few years ago ( I live in her district). We had a brief discussion on my Montreal Expos sweatshirt (how you don’t see much Expos merch). She was cool. Glad she keeps winning.

  12. I remember when she beat that guy who said he was the biggest homophobe in Virginia.

  13. I’m so insanely happy for Danica. She’s so smart and she’s so deserving ❤️

  14. Based Virginia!

Today was a win all around, love to see it!

  15. Yeah, people can figure out who’s transgender. Because we’re not morons.

  16. Yay I love seeing people that represent people like me in government!

  17. For added context, Roem won a senate seat in a highly competitive district in [the outer suburbs](https://www.vpap.org/offices/state-senate-30/district/) of D.C.

A decade ago, the district would have been red. It is still purple. If you knew nothing about Roem, you’d spit when you heard that Democrats had nominated a transgender woman *there.*

Thing is, Roem has won tough races before. In 2018, she ran against Bob Marshall for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. Marshall was a 26-year state delegate who was one of the farthest-right social conservatives in the chamber. He was known as Sideshow Bob; he repeatedly tried to show gay porn to his colleagues, on the floor, to prove the need to ban deviant same-sex marriage.

Roem, then a journalist, announced that she was running because she was sick of Marshall focusing on social issues instead of funding road expansion in his gridlocked district. She ran on a promise to widen a major road. She beat Marshall 54-46. She’s won re-election twice by similar margins.

It was risky for her to seek this state senate seat. Remember, Glenn Youngkin ran partly on trans panic. He convinced the GOP that it was a winning issue in suburban districts like Roem’s. (Roem’s district borders Loudoun County, the heart of the school-bathroom wars.)

    And tonight, she won, 52-48.

  18. I hope every trans kid hears about this and feels hopeful. The fight’s far from over, but we’re clearly stronger than anyone expects.

  19. See that?. Every time JK complains about trans women we will trans another congressperson.

    Every. Time.

  20. In Sweden, we have also observed the growing influence of right-wing movements in our country. It’s spreading rapidly. Personally, I find it easy to differentiate between two extremes. I strongly prefer to live in a society that celebrates diversity, with frequent gay parades and where children can enjoy story hours at the library, listening to individuals who identify as transgender, drag, or nonbinary, even adopting unique names like ‘Magnificent Wine-hooker’. This is in contrast to a country where books are burned, walls are built at the border, and people face harassment due to their sexual orientation.

  21. One day we can live in a world where this isn’t important, and the quality of one’s work in the position is what matters.

Don’t care if you’re trans or not. Just do a good job representing those who elected you.
